I've been starting to record lately and need to add bass parts to what I'm doing.
I have no idea what I should be looking at to buy.
What would be a decent bass to pick up used for a couple hundred bucks?

I was suggested the Ibanez SR506 or SR505, but I'm looking for 5/6 string basses. They look great on paper, but I haven't gotten around to finding one yet. Still too much other gear on my list.

yeah those soundgear basses are a lot of value for the $ IMO
you could alternately take a look at the peavey grind series. or if you're on a serious budget- a squier bass has gotten me through more than once.

+1 on Ibanez SoundGear.

When I played bass back in the day, one of my main basses was an Ibanez SoundGear (4 string, fretless). They were very good for the money. The necks, IIRC, were thin compared to most other basses, namely Fender and my fav, Rickenbackers...so more comfortable to use for some guitarists. Since I have what I consider good basses, I haven't looked for low cost options in awhile, so there may be more/better options around.

I have a Ibby SG 305 with actives, great spounding bass for the money.

My old bass player played a 5 string Ibanez Soundgear, it was active. Nice sounding bass. I have played a schector 5 string bass and really liked it. I was very tempted to buy it used as it would have only been $300, but I am holding out for a MM sterling 5 string.

thanks for the replies everyone.
I will be going Di with it so would I be better off with active pickups?

If you are going DI, than yes I think active pickups are better. We do a Christmas gig once a year where we travel around. The usual bass player uses his 4 string active Shector and just goes direct into the powered mixer. It sounds pretty good. Much better than my bass Fender Jazz bass does going direct into the PA.

Will you have an active DI? I use a Tech 21 Programmable Bass Driver DI direct with my passive Ric 4003...three tones on tap. Tech 21 has a single channel version, and the Character series VT, and VT deluxe (or whatever its called, with 6 presets)...I recommend something like this rather than going direct into the board: use any bass you want, and have some tone control in a small package. IMO of course.

Definitely this. I play an aerodyne p bass and the p pickup WITH the jazz pickup really makes an amazing combo. You get the classic jazz grind (if you like grind) and the nice round p to fill up where the jazz leaves off. I LOVE the sound of my bass...but I purposely make it sound shitty live; tube screamer with everything dimed...just because hahaha. I love being in hardcore bands...sound guys hate me and kids think I'm the shit when I have a gross bass sound. LOVE IT.
