Well Rig rawk?

What doth thou decree?

We can all throw down the opening to "Lay it down", would you go onstage and don the spandex to play it?

:gethim: :D

no choice in the poll for my thoughts....

If you like it, and there is a demand for it to play live, why not? lots of people make decent money doing things like this, plus the live experience is always fun as well.....

If it's something YOU want to do who cares what anyone else thinks.

FWIW: if I could find the right guys to do a TOOL tribute, I'd joing in a heartbeat.

Well thats choice one!

I think it's lame, just my opinion. I like being original, and the people who
come see us really dig what we play.
But if playing covers gets your rocks off then so be it.
I've only heard one cover band that had the songs down
cold and they are the "Mega 80s" here in Detroit.
Haven't heard a band that good ever.
Some cats can't write songs, riffs etc and that's to bad.

Gotta clarify I mean tribute, as in a whole set of just the one band... costumes or not!

Playing covers for $$ does not count.

i play in a cover band, so i'll say wtf lol. it's something to do anyways.
i can write good riffs - it's just that i can't find people who are interested in being an "originals" band. they just want to play in a cover band to play some gigs on the weekends and make a little money.
i would think being in a 'tribute' band would get kind of even more boring than being in a cover band though. unless you really, really, really like the band you're covering lol

Nothing wrong with a tribute band. I met a guy that plays in a band that does the live backing for a Karaoke night. Thought that was a trip. He said they always pack the club out and it can be pretty funny. But as a reality check, I have never gone to see a tribute band.

Do a Neil Diamond tribute band like in that movie... those guys were trying to keep their friend from marrying this super bitch... Saving Silverman!! Yeah.... Reachin out.... Touchin you..... Touchin me...... Touchin me more.... :jerkit:

but yeah - about the guy saying most cover bands aren't really tight - i've kind of ran into that with the guys i'm playing with now. they just want to get some songs together and go play in some bars. not really too worried about sounding like we're ready to go on tour with skynyrd or anything, the bass player doesn't even seem like he wants to let me teach him some new stuff to jam on, or even try to wrap his head around the idea that Eb tuning is easier to sing too lol.
they don't even really want to just kick it and jam out to some old zepplin for awhile for the hell of it or anything.
oh well. we're getting pretty tight, but i keep better rythm than the bass player does half the time lol.

Everyone does covers, very few can do a GOOD tribute.
It takes a unique talent to be able to play in a good tribute band.
A top notch tribute band has the gear, the clothes, the looks, the moves, everything.
So much more commitment required than simply playing the songs right.
Bands that can pull off the tribute thing and do it well have my utmost respect.
The first good tribute band I saw was The BriTins over 25 years ago!
They did the early Beatles stuff and had everything, every detail down perfect.

Cover band and tribute band are two very very different things.

I gotta say this though, and it has to do with covers, originals.
It's really hard to find decent musicians, cats you can click with.
I'm sure most of us has been in a situation where we had to deal
with somebody for the sake of harmony, band sake.
And ability, that kinda plays into what kind of band it's gonna be.
I'm pretty lucky,my bass player plays in Kenny Olsons band.
This dude has chops like Cliff Burton, and my drummer and I have
been playing together for 20 years.
But finding a singer has been the worst.
Flake after flake,wannabees.

Exactly my point, huge difference between a cover band and tribute.

The best thing about being in my Tribute band is that I can improvise like crazy just the original band members did live...so nothing becomes stail and autopilot. Plus its Deep Purple and Rainbow, so its heavy music with different styles incorporated into it to make it more interesting and i get to Crank the shit out of my Marshalls!

I'm not casting judgement on anyone.

For myself, however, playing in a tribute band would be one of the worst possible musical experiences I could imagine. :aww:

that's been my biggest problem pretty much my whole life lol.
if i could get in with a few guys that really just love to play as much as i do i'd really shine, and be happy as fuck. it's just hard to find.
the guys i'm playing with now are pretty good, and we play good together, and we have a pretty good singer actually, but everyone has other stuff on their plate like kids and family and what not, and it's cool i guess it's just kind of fun to play out and jam on the weekends you know.
i just wish we had a bass player that was more of a bass 'guru' lemmy fan instead of a guy that wants to play 'pour some sugar on me' because 'the girls like it' lol
i mean i'll play some music i don't like to get gigs and keep the crowd happy, but the guy wants to play simple minds' "don't you forget about me" he announced last week. the last time i checked that was gay bar music lol

there's a skynyrd tribute band playing here the 17th. that wouldn't be too bad lol.

Being in a tribute band is definitely not for everyone. I have fun playing in my band, I love the songs, and get paid well too-- so there really is no down side.

The fact that it's a Journey tribute also means that there are lots of nice females in the crowd. :D

its not my bag but but if your covering material you love to play and the audience loves to hear it then more power to ya. it beats the hell out of being in an original band that can't get booked lol....tribute bands get some nice work

Zachman, good stuff, the singer is dead on Steve perry lol...

I actually just formed a Tribute band, in addition to my original band.

Bottom line: if you're playing guitar, cranking your amp, having fun, and getting paid...

HOW IS THAT BAD???????!?!?!?!?!?!?
