...for around $700-800. new or used. gonna be coupled with an engl savage. prefer fixed bridge or string-thru (or a non-locking trem), but not absolutely necessary.

i've heard good things about the jeff loomis schecter (though i always feel weird owning/playing 'signature' series guitars ), but i've also heard ibanez is and always has been the way to go with 7-strings. any off-brands to take into consideration? any specific things to look for (construction type, pickups, neck shape for comfort, etc.)?

going to follow this one, two of the same exact companies/models i have been eyeballing for a future 7 purchase.

FWIW i do know that the loomis signature model has the larger frets compared to the normal schecter 7 string models. the 7620 from ibanez tends to be the first choice as well. interested what others can add here. sub'ed :)

I'll take an Ibanez K7 over any 7 out there. Too bad you bring this up now - I recently sold/traded a pair of them.

Why Ibanez? The neck. The K7 has the best neck I've ever felt in a 7. Not a fan of the neck-thrus like Schecter. They always felt way too fat and wide. The K7 profile is awesome - just thin enough to make it easy to play (superior to even the Ibanez 76xx series), while not feeling too thin like some RGs seem - to me anyway.

how are those dimarzios the k7 comes loaded with? worth keeping or swap em out? looking for tight response with more mids and bass.

For my limited 7 string playing, I like the Loomis. Never had a problem with the "big" necks on these guitars and I mostly play 6 strings. I can pick up the Loomis and play just fine.

I gotta say, I LOVE my Schecter C-7 Blackjack ATX. Mahogany Neck thru body,Ebony Fretboard, Loaded with Blackouts at the moment, but will be putting BKP Aftermath set in eventually. I am pretty new to the world of 7's, but from the majority I have played under 1500 bucks, either this or the Loomis you can't go wrong. I love the Loomis, however that guitar IS heavier than hell! I couldn't believe the weight on the thing. Not an issue to me however. I loved the neck, The Jumbo frets were a big plus, and it played like butter. The Quality Control on them I think is top notch as well...

Locking trem: Ibanez K-7 or Loomis (longer scale so better for lower than B tuning)

Fixed bridge: Ibanez rg 7621 or Carvin 727/747 or Loomis (longer scale so better for lower than B tuning)

I have a K-7 and love it as is!

only 7's I have played and would consider owning is the old rg 7620...not saying the other ibenhad 7 stringers aren't any good but I will take an ibenhad over any 7 string model out there

Keep!! Seven strings DO NOT NEED hot pickups. The low tuning does enough, and hot = mud IMO. They keep things pretty articulate, and have a nice mid growl. When you're tuned down to A, bass is not an issue. ;)

ESP LTD 607B

One of the best 7 strings I've ever played. And being a baritone scale it keeps all drop tunings tight.
