Best amp for this guitar sound?

What about running an AMT P1 in the FX loop, instead of buying a 5150?
"The P1 Legend Amp Series pedal was designed similar in tone to one of the most esteemed amplifiers, the 5150*. The sound of the AMT P1 is rich and full in tone, providing tube-like rock distortion. Well defined, clean, clear, cutting, crunchy distortion is what the P1's all about."

Dunno if you've heard Black Breath, but they have the sound you are looking for and use a jcm800 and a peavey vtm with a boss hm-2. Both guitarists have identical setups.

I think his 800 with an HM2 would do the trick. That's a classic Swedish death metal setup, but to get note definition needed for thrash, be sure to roll back on the highs on the pedal because they can get overbearing. If you crank it back past about 9 o'clock though, you'll lose much of the character the HM2 is known for. HM2s are my favorite distortions and I've amassed a small collection of them because I keep buying them on impulse when I see one laying around.

I think he's going to try an HM2. There are two different versions apparently (Japanese and Taiwanese). What are the differences between them? Are there any differences?

There's no audible difference. You will read all sorts of internet debate comparing the two, analyzing components, etc, but I own multiples of both versions and can't tell the difference.

Awesome. We're gonna give the HM2 a go then. I think he's also planning on talking to a tech about a mod too.

Aaah cool. label bros! Yeah, gonna come over next year when our new album is out. HR is a good label, looking forward to your oz style stuff.

Cool, looking forward to that! Yep, HRR is definitely a top label

Fuck! heard your stuff on myspace, need a rhythm guitarist? haha

Ok on topic: have you thought about slaving a preamp into the marshall? so many options with these things.

also about the HM2 i prefer using medium/low output pickups with it on a medium gain amplifier, used as a boost. pedal settings -- lows typically about 3 o'clock, highs 3 to max, gain all the way down, level all the way up. some people quote that ekeroth video about diming everything... but that's not how entombed set theirs either, it's a joke or possible how their early releases were recorded, but sounds awful unless you have the right amplifier. actually uffe for a long time used a ds-1 and alex used the hm2. the magic classic combo is a jcm800 boosted with an hm2.

Hey guys, got an update.

Well the HM2 wasn't quite what we were after unfortunately. Just didn't seem to have the right sound for us.

What else can we try? The TS9 just simply will not do it. There's not enough distortion/crunch from it. Does his JCM800 need to be modded - are there any specific mods? Are they any other overdrive pedals we could try? Have been thinking about the BOSS SD1 and OD3. Or even the Boss DS1 distortion pedal? Would any of these be worth a try?

We were probably being a bit too specific with the sound samples I posted. We just generally need it mid to high. There has to be a way! Haha. Early Slayer was recorded using JCM800s I think and they had a killer tone!

Haha, not really looking for a rhythm at the moment

Nah, haven't really thought about that sort of preamp stuff yet...

How about boosting with a Proco Rat? If an HM2 and a tubescreamer didn't work out, the Rat is a good 'in between' overdrive and often used with 800s.
