I've always gone with SED Winged C's, but read online from a few that they're not what they used to be. Any recent experiences with sound and build quality with these? If not those, what is working in your Marshall for rock/hard rock?

I play a BFG modded Eggie Seminar head (amazing!) and a Splawn Pro Stock.

Cheers!

=C='s are still the same but at $90 a pair I doubt im gonna pay that.

So what do you think you'll move to from C's?

I currently bought these and they kick ass. They are expensive but if you have an amp running high plate voltages, you need a reliable tubes. So they might pay off in the long run. I wss told that Tung Sol EL34's are a good replacement for Winged Cs.

Still shopping around.

I may go with something from Laura. She knows Tewbs.

Tung Sol EL34B.

Care to elaborate? Thanks!

They sound good and are reliable. They sound thick, but not very dark. IMO, you have to spend a good amount more to get anything better.

I like the Mullard Reissue EL34's I got recently. Not sure how long they will last at 460pv, but they sound pretty good.

KT77s. Only two options available and they're both pretty dope: JJ and Gold Lion. Haven't tried the JJs. But the Gold Lions sound awesome in my Diezel. Not sure how they'll respond in a Marshall circuit though. They have an extended high-end and a tighter low-end than the C's. But the mid range is still very present and has a nice mean grind to it. But might stiffen up a Marshall a tad. They're also pretty reliable as far as I can tell. Rated the same, if not a little better, as far as being able to handle high plate voltages.

Didn't have good luck with those in my 800. They lasted about a month before one went out. But that could happen with any tube. Love the winged C's but Steve Henning was recommending a Ruby tube here while back that was suppose to really good and a lot less expensive than the SED.

Also have GT EL34M's (Chinese Mullard copies). They got good reviews, and sound pretty good - a little brighter than the Sovtek Mullard reissues. Not sure about reliability though, but if I see enough decent reviews, I chance it.

Anything but spending $100 on Winged C tubes that some have said aren't made as well (Doug's Tubes says they don't stock them anymore because they aren't the same).

I may get flamed for this but my little JCM800 vertical input 1x12 combo does well with JJs'. I have had them short out once when I was long overdue to change them. I do not buy them from EuroBobTubes. If it wasn't a combo amp which kills tubes I would use something a bit more toneful but these work well if you can turn it up!

JJ's work in Marshall's for me. With the relatively low plate voltage, you don't need to break the bank with SED's and I think SED's tend to be a little sterile in a Marshall.

Depends on what Marshall. Every Marshall I've had my hands on has had a plate voltage fairly close to 500v.

Yours must be special. Of the 30 or so I have owned, they generally are around the 450-460V range.

Of the 200 I've owned, they've all been 580volts.

I'm gonna throw a vote in the ring for the Ruby EL34BHT. Just an all around great tube. Rugged, inexpensive, and they sound great.

I've used the JJ's but, I could tell a noticable difference when I put the winged C's in. The main difference being string to string clarity.
