I need 3 ECC83 preamp tubes for my JCM800 2203x. It has been modded to take KT88 power tubes. I run the amp pretty much clean on the verge of break up, Low Input, and use pedals for dirt. It's been quite some time since I owned a marshall and was wondering what the Preamp tubes of choice are these days. Thanks!

i had three jj's in mine before i switched to some old rca's a friend of mine had. i like the rca's, but the jj's sounded great in it. i think cause the marshall is bright the jj's kinda work with it.
mine uses kt88's as well.

Best current production tube for Marshall preamps IMO are the C9 chinese tubes.
Ruby calls them 12AX7AC5.

I can't believe I'm gonna recommend this tube because I typically despise it, especially in bright amps like Marshalls, but the tung sol 12ax7 may be worth looking because you're running your amp basically clean. It's a bright, but open sounding tube. It's also doesn't break up as quick as some 12ax7's. I had some in a naturally bright amp and it was too much, but I left them in the clean channel for the above reasons, and it sounds really good in there.

JJ's and RFT's are also good for bright amps, but they do break up a lot quicker.

i really like JJs in my JCM800 seem to mix well with the amp

I was searching for a better low gain sound in my Marshall. What worked bet was a lower output Jan Phillips 5751 in V1. They are about 70% the output of a standard 12ax7. When fully cranked the high gain was a little smoother. Pretty awesome tube.

If you are going to hit it the front end with pedals, it really doesn't matter too much on what is "best". Just use JJ's.

This^ ;)

Can't stand JJ preamp tubes, some people like them though. I 'd go with a 9th gen Chinese in V1 and put the Tung-Sol in V2. Might wanna try a 12at7 in the phase inverter to reduce a bit of gain. You might like it a lot since you're using pedals for dirt.
