heya guys,

thinking about getting an eq pedal. i want something good, but can't afford to break the bank, either. anyone have an opinion? pros, cons, etc....

thanks!

My Boss GE-7 does a great job...I boost up the "level" and bump the mids up, and BOOM...my solos cut like a knife! A little bit of added noise, but I am boosting the output.

I would like to get it modded eventually to maybe keep the noise down, but for now...it is really awesome. I bought mine new for $45...I was buying an amp too (package deal baby!)

I've heard good things about the MXR 6-band and 10-band EQs... it might be worth it to look into one. Also the now discontinued Boss PQ-4 Parametric EQ is supposed to be pretty great as well!

Vfe pedal rocket eq with boost is amazing and affordable.

It has:

a shelving low band fro 300 hz down.

a shelving high band from 2 k up.

both with 12 db boost or cut.

It also has a sweepable mid band for everything in-between 300 and 2 k with 15 db boost/ cut.

On top of that it has 40db of boost available and bumps up internal voltage with a charge pump for ultimate headroom.

Relay controlled true bypass.

I have had the fromel shape and the empress eqs also, this one kills both even though half the price!

I like my MXR. I got a GE-7 and it works fine but adds a little noisy hiss, nothing you can really notice in a band setting and is not a problem at all if you use a noise suppressor, but I try not to use those things unless I absolutely have to.

danelectro fish and chips eq -- best bang for the buck imo a great 7 band eq pedal

they're pretty cheap new and you get an awesome danelectro 9v battery with it =)
tiny footprint, works well, and hardly adds any hiss/noise -

in comparison to a boss geq-7 that i held onto, that hisses like a snake with any frequency even just slightly boosted or lowered a bit.

the only weird thing about the danelectro is how the footswitch feels, it's not like any other stompbox i've tried, it's not a bad thing, but it'll catch you offguard the first time you try it and it also looks very cool

I had the same experience as dehumanize with the boss. I have MXR 10 band eqs and they have worked very well for me. If I need another EQ its a no brainier for me get another MXR

I love my MXR 10 band. The Dano Fish N Chips is cool too but those things are fragile!

Fromel Shape EQ is what you want! More than the fish and chips, but its perfect.

MXR-10 works great

One of these in a true bypass looper and you are set. The MXR 10 band is great and I use it in the loop only when I need to mostly, but the bypassed tone takes a hit unfortunately. It's like most other MXR pedals where the bypass takes a little of your sound with it. The activated circuit does not suffer this weakness, only when the unit is bypassed.

Reviving an old thread, I'm shopping for an EQ pedal currently. All the ones you guys are mentioning seem to be mentioned on this EQ pedal buyer's guide, so that's making me feel good that everyone is spot on all around. Agh I'm so tempted by the Empress... that price tag though... $$$

I am going to get one of these in a day or 2. It's mesa, so it has to have a ton of switches and knobs. But it WILL break the bank @ 3 hondo

Oh crap, I didn't realize someone UNDEADED this thread

My go-to is the MXR 6-Band.

It has these guitar-specific bands:

100Hz
200Hz
400Hz
800Hz
1.6KHz
3.2KHz

Each can be boosted to a very high +18dB.

Now, it does hiss if you're boosting. One way I completely kill the hiss (if I'm not using a noise suppressor) is by using an old trick that Tom Scholz (Boston) mentioned:

"After the preamp," he continues, "I have a 6-band MXR Graphic Equalizer that runs on batteries-which in itself is noisier than hell, but sounds all right after it's preamped."

So, if I feed the MXR 6-Band a hot signal (with say an EP-3 preamp), the hiss disappears!

My favorite EQ is the Boss GE-10, sounds great and quiet, EVH used it in the early days and I believe Lynch still uses one

I have an Empress paraEQ, which is really nice for sweeping through frequencies and adjusting the Q. It only has 3 bands but lets face it, Parametric is the way to go if you only want to boost/cut a few frequencies.

I've used it in the effects loop and it works great

This. 20 bucks and you're set. Better than MXR and Boss to my ears, and more transparent/less noisy.

I agree. I also like the Boogie 5 band EQ pedal.
