Best EQ?

Hey guys, I am in the market for a couple of EQ's. One graphic and one parametric. Noise is my biggest concern. I am looking at the MXR ten band EQ but was wondering if the new ones are queit or not through a distorted amp. Also are the old AC powered MXR models quieter (because of the AC powered headroom) or noisier (because they are old)? Are the modded Boss GE-7's any quieter than an MXR? Are there any others out there? Maybe the old Ross ten band?

I really want an Empress ParaEQ if I get parametric pedal, but could get a Rane or some other older rack unit for about 1/3 of the cost. Any thoughts?

I use an MXR KFK 10 band and it's quiet when set flat. Of course when you start boosting frequencies using any pedal you amplify noise, that's the nature of the beast. It's a good pedal to have either way. You need more than 7 bands if you want to have enough flexibility to 'edit' your tone without destroying it. Mine is also AC powered (wall adapter for 18V operation). Just get a new MXR.

This might sound ridiculous, but the Danelectro Fish n' Chips is my favorite EQ. I use it every day. I've found that it is a very powerful tone shaping tool, and didn't color my original tone to a bad degree. I've never once had noise issues with it either, no matter what rig I've run it through, and at every level of gain and volume. All of that for around $30-40? Awesome. I payed $25 for mine on eBay, brand new in the package. Had it for 4 years, never once had a problem.

I can't say the other Dano pedals are of similar quality, but this EQ is top notch!

In pedal form, I'd look into an MXR or BYOC. In rack form, I'd buy the 1128 I'm selling.

Edit: The Dano is surprisingly great as well, and easily the most affordable. It was better than my modded Boss.

Thanks guys-
The Dano is better than a modded Boss? Wow.
The 1128 looks real nice but a little out of my price range. I have been looking at the older RANE PE-15 or 17 for a parametric.
The MXR may be my best bet on a graphic pedal since I would have a few more low frequency sliders to work with.

The Allums modded GEQ 7 is awesome. Very quiet. I love mine

The empress slays. definitely the best pedal based parametric in existence right now. quiet and versatile. Ive had two of them.

dont use graphics so no comment there.

The MXR and Boss EQs are both rather noisy, but the MXR is still better than Boss.

Does anybody know much about good dual-channel graphic EQs for the effects loop? I use a stereo setup.

They're pretty rare, but you could try looking for a TC 2240. They go for about $300-$400ish, I think.

Edit: Just realized you said graphic EQ and not parametric.

I like the rane pe-15, it's pretty quiet. The only con I could think of is when it's engaged it sucks a little volume out so you just have to adjust it a little louder on the amp. It wouldn't be much of a problem is you're using a 50 or 100 watter.
