What do you guys think is the best fuzz unit out there regardless of price? I want something with a really angry, growl for power chords, but not low-fi sounding, shrill, or raspy, but rather very ballsy, and also not muffled or too dark. So far I have my eye on the following pedals (especially the first one):
Rainger Freakenstein
Wampler Leviathan
MJM Foxey
Tortuga Yeti
Retro Channel The Fuzz

I have the red witch. I do like it but it can be very bright at times. I've always liked the fuzz factory for diversity.

Blackout Effectors Twosome is amazing. Its the Fixed and the Musket together, but for what you are describing I would say that the Musket is what you are looking for. I have owned several Big Muffs, a dual Fuzz from Keisman pedals, Earthquaker devices Hoof Reaper, a couple of Devi Ever pedals and I honestly believe that the Twosome is the best fuzz I have ever owned.

This is tough one, there are soooooo many fuzz pedals.

The two I like the best, and I mention two because they are really different, is the Catalinbread Manx Loaghtan and Flickinger Angry Sparrow.

Blackout Musket and Black Arts Pharaoh are in my stash. The Musket, or the Twosome from Blackout have crazy amounts of tonal variations. Haven't had any experience with the others on the list...

I am not a fuzz man at all but one time I plugged into the old version of the Fulltone '69 I was blown away. They go for around 300 bucks. I've never played the new small enclosure version though. It was a smoother fuzz sound than I was expecting. I think it's Fuzz Face based and germanium, but honestly I don't know much about the fuzz world outside of that sole experience and the Big Muff. I've never liked fuzz sounds I've heard until that '69.

Email Arcane Analog or message him on Facebook and get exactly what you want. Guy does absolutely fantastic work for very reasonable prices. I have three different fuzz pedals he's built for me.

No best fuzz, just different flavors. Some are also very rig dependant. I had one of the old '69s. It sounded great with my old Bassman, but terrible through my Fryette. Analogman, Skreddy, and even Dunlop all make great fuzztones.

I crossed the Red Witch and Pharaoh off my list after trying them. I bought a used Death By Audio Fuzz War. The pharaoh and red witch sounded like toys in comparison. The fuzz war though still sounds a little synthetic. The leviathan seems promising, but based on the clips I heard it might be too compressed for my tastes. I don't want something more compressed than the Fuzz War, even though it's more open than most fuzzes. I also added the Retro Channel The Fuzz to the list because the proguitarshop video of it sounded really good. Based on clips (I know usually not useful) the MJM Foxey and Retro Channel sounded best to me. Any more thoughts?

I found the Leviathan a little dark with humbuckers. I'm using the Analogman Astrotone at the moment, plenty of treble if you need it.
