I'm looking into getting a Marshall JCM800 sounding amp and was wondering what you thought has the best tone? My price range is around a grand (new or used). I've looked into a Stiletto, QR, JCM800, DSL, Vintage Modern ect. Is there anything else I should look at? What do you think has the best tone? ...BTW, I'm not into the JVM and kt88's tend to give me a headache for some odd reason, so I'd like to stay away from them. I'd appreciate some help. Thanks :)

If you want a JCM 800, why not get a JCM 800? They're in that price range.

This is true.
Try to find either a 2203 JMP, 2203x or original horizontal input JCM800. Or a used Quickrod... ;)
The 3 preamp tube without the gears is my personal favorite, amp is freaking great!

Seriously?
just thought someone could out marshall the actual marshall.

Like I said, the closest thing to an out-Marshalled Marshall that I've come across is the Splawn QR.

What he said. I bought a Quik Rod and sold my JCM 800 soon after. Splatter has one for sale in the classifieds.

I concur with the above. If you want a JCM 800 type of sound for $1k or less...just get a JCM 800... :D

For 1k Soldano Avenger. Single channel and usually no effects loop though.

But why not save some pennies and get a Cameron, Fortin, or Friedman.

Pretty large difference between some of the amps you've listed.

Have you played many (or any) 800's?

If so, and that's what you dig, grab an original vertical input. You can find them under a grand all over the place.

If you're looking for more gain and don't want to boost, I like the Quickrod.

Didn't care for the Stiletto at all.

Dude the last 3 Camerons sold went for over $2300, he has a shitload of saving to do

Get an 800 and have a good marshall man go through it.

+1

Had a pristine jcm800 in the rare green tolex...sold it shortly after I bought my Quick Rod. Not knocking the Marshall of course, wish I would've kept it actually, just that I wouldn't play through it again after buying/hearing the Splawn, kinda redundant, so I ditched it. But it sure would've been good to keep for the collection thing. The don't let great gear slip through your hands lesson learned.

Do you mean the VM with KT66's?

You can get a Laney AOR for under $500.00 and change to a Jcm800 with a couple of resister changes. If you will spend up to a grand, I agree you should get the real thing.

This was my first thought. I've seen a couple of JCM800s around here lately for $700-$800 on CL.
