Sooo....I’m aware that there are a ton of options out there but who do you guys think makes the best Klon clone? Lots of love for the Archer, Tuminus, and the Mythical Overdrive. What do you guys think??

mythos mjolnir is my favorite. I absolutely love that pedal.

Honestly none of those clones did it for me. The KTR didn’t do it either when AB’ed with the real thing. They capture the overall flavor and voicing, but not what makes the Klon special from other pedals. What makes the Klon special to me is this organic/unfiltered tone with a real vocal/human quality to it when playing leads or single note lines. Some guys like some clones as good or better than the original, but I’ve yet to hear any that didn’t sound filtered or restrained when I compared them to my original silver one.

Although, it’s not a Klon type pedal, I found the Thorpy Gunshot to be the closest pedal I’ve come across to having that organic and vocal quality like my Klon. I hear it’s based more around a tube screamer and rat hybrid, but it has a similar organic, 3D quality to it like a Klon.

I’d say comparing the clones to the original is like comparing orang juice from concentrate to the best fresh squeezed version. Same flavor, not the same quality. The Thorpy Gunshot is like having another fresh squeezed juice with my silly analogy. The Klon sent my Thorpy packing though, but still a very cool pedal, especially for the price

The only thing about the Thorpy is that I remember it being quite noisy. The Klon is pretty quiet unless you’re playing it with a bad battery

I’m loving the VFE Merman. It’s a clone, but with more options that don’t change its original tone.

I have a mojo sacred cow which his a bass cut option which tightens it up a tad which i really dig and sort of feels like a very natural extension of the amp. However, I feel psychodave has an incredible ear for all things hotrodded and Marshall paired and if he tips his hat at the Merman with its options then I would consider that one too.

Thorpy gunshot looks intriguing though yes.

Whats wrong with using the old trusty TS-9?
It's a very different color. Klons don't have the same mid bump or bass cut and the OD sounds different. Both can sound great.

I like the Ryra Klone pedal but have not compared to others.

I like the mythical overdrive a lot, and even if it's not exact I like the j rockett archer Rockaway pedal, can really make some pretty cool changes with it.

Anyone ever tried the Zoom PD-01?

Apparently that was heralded as the poor man's Klon in its heyday..
I have one, but never played a Klon, so I can't compare.
It's a nice, wide/open sounding overdrive that can be used as a clean boost too, and has Bass/Treble controls. Very sturdy, true bypass.

Ceriatone Centrua and Mythoical Overdrive seem to be the top 2 from my research.

I went with the Chellee Ponyboy and have been very happy, but I have never played a real Klon

I went through a crazy amount of Klones, and my two keepers are the Arc Effects Klone & Ponyboy.

I’ve owned a Klon and built about 10 clones for friends.
The Ceriatone Centura is identical, into both clean and dirty amps, at all knob settings.

No two klones sound the same nor do two real klons sound the same. The biggest thing to take in the factor when comparing the two is not to dial them in based off of the knob position. Since potentiometers have a 20% tolerance you have to compare and dial them in based off of ear not position. 1 Klon with the gain or tone knob at 1 o'clock may be identical as another klon with the settings at 11 or 12 o'clock. Taper and tolerance of the pots is where the difference is there were no magic mojo parts in the klon that make it sound different tonally only were on the dial to set it

I thought there ARE parts in the original Klon that do make it impossible to really clone? And that they aren't available anymore? This is why the builder hardly if ever puts one out there.
Klons aren't my thing but that's what I always thought.

I've owned at least 6 different types, and found the KTR to be the keeper, over all including the Ceriatone.

Not the case. Bill For acknowledged the diodes were 1n34s. And this has been confirmed by the few that have been degooped. He claimed that he used parts no longer available. Well, not available from distributors true, but plenty available on the surplus market. He did use some Panasonic film caps that are NOS, but those are available to, but nothing holy Grail. It's simply a fantastic design . I've built 2 clones that are exact to the component and enclosure. And a/b'd to real Klons. Sold both the the real Klons owners/ professional musicians
