i have a warmoth body superstrat that is in need of pickup upgrade, and i was looking for something that can coil split and do a good single coil sound....without much hum.

any ideas?

You had me until...'without much hum'

I was going to say a Dimazio SD. But splitting a humbucker = hum...unless someone has come up with something else.

rio grande dirty harry pickups are supposed to be it, but i hear they also have a bunch of high end bite all of the time.

dimarzio super distortion was my first thought for straight up humbucker, then maybe bill lawrence?

All 4 conductor Lace Humbuckers split with NO noise. It's pretty epic.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like any good humbucker I've dealt with that can be split, sounds good split. It's like a good humbucker consists of 2 good coils, and you split them and only use one good coil. I would just look for a good four conductor pickup and wire it with a split.

Look for pickups with one coil wound hotter than the other such as Fralin Unbuckers. Split using the hotter coil. Still will have hum.

Another option would be to wire in parallel for a cleaner, thinner, sound with no hum.

FWIW, I had a Dimarzio 36th in the bridge of my strat that split very nicely.

If hum is a deal breaker then do what boost said and wire the pickup in series. It's still a humbucker but sounds and feels like a singlecoil.

You can wire in a switch to toggle between parallel and series...

Rio Grande Tallboy humbucker is literally two singles put together, so it splits to a single coil, and sounds real good.

i emailed the sales guys over at Lace and asked them about specific sets of duallys to see what they suggested. thanks for reminding me about Lace.....i had some of their pickups 10 years ago, but forgot all about them.

The Aldrich sounds great split but the volume drop is to much for it to be usable for me. :aww:

Another vote for the Aldrich. The volume does drop slightly but that's pretty common.

i don't think you can get around a volume drop. heck, i get a volume drop when i switch from les paul to strat.

I like doing in parallel like was suggested! It sounds very single coil-y to me without the hum. Might not be convincing right next to a single coil, but it's definitely in the ballpark.

Right now I'm playing a set of Barden Two/Tones. No Hum and little to no volume drop. Very pleased all the way around with these and especially the tone, where it matters most. Both the Neck and Bridge split with a pull-pot which provide lots of tonal combinations.

if i went Lace dually's, and idea which set would be best for each position?

I don't like any really. The S1 switching button on the new USA Deluxe Tele is good. If you find one that can get a good Broadcaster tone,... That would be fan fucking tastic...

Lt us know how it goes.

Well I guess it comes down to personal taste. Personally I don't like pickup combos where each position sounds like a totally different guitar, so I prefer sets of similar pickups.

The Lace Hot Gold is possibly my favourite single-coil Strat pup ever, so if it were me I'd load the axe up with Hot Golds including a Hot Gold Dually wherever a humbucker was needed because the Hot Gold Dually is literally two Hot Golds mounted together. That means in split mode and in split "inbetween" positions it's actually a genuine single-coil Strat pickup there.

You can also try running the coils in parallel. You still get the hum and it sounds more like a hot single coil in general. Sd sells those triple shot rings so you can get series, parallel and split options.

Aldrich does split well too, never tried it in parallel though.
