Does anybody have any suggestions for the best tubes to use for a Marshall JMP-1 ?

They're all 12ax7 right? I'd email Dougs Tubes and see what they recommend. They have helped me out several times, always with good results.

They are all 12ax7. I know, it's not rocket science. I just know there are a few guys on here that have used these preamps so I figured I would ask here.

I thought you somehow got a 50th anniversary JMP one watter!

I've just fitted a matched pair of Cryo treated ElectroHamonix valves that I got from Watford Valves here in the UK.

I'm really impressed with them...low noise and superb tone.

Doesn't matter. The tube is just for looks in the JMP-1 :D

Gonna sound funny but I've got the best result with Mesa pres.

I have tried just about everything out there and the JJ ECC83S is the best sounding to me.

Here is a clip with those tubes in the pre:

If you're going for more Vintage type and 80s tones, you might try the JJ803s- it has a clearer type gain in some preamps, but I've never heard it in a JMP1 but it seemed to minimize the Diode Clipping or mask it in my Hughes and Kettner Tubeman- meaning it now sounds much more "tubelike" and rich with the JJ803s.

Since the JMP 1 uses diode clipping as well- the JJ803s might be the perfect tubes for it- they have a huge plate- different construction etc. and may overshadow the diode clipping as well and provide even more convincing tones.

Haven't tried the JJ803s in my ADA MP1 'cause it sounds very good with the JJ83s .

I don't play metal though- so I do Plexi and Marshall and Modded Marshall smoother stuff.

I used the 803s for about a year in my JMP-1 and they sounded very good. They sound very good in my NMV Marshalls, too.

They seem less fizzy in higher gain, right and on your non MVs probably just sound beefier, I'm guessing than the regular 12AX7s ?
