hi guys!

can anyone of you cracks tell me which is are the best tubes for the sl module...? i´m having a jan philips 5751 and a ECC803S in it...(by the way - would anybody also tell me which side is v1 and which v2?)

at the moment it sounds as if there´s a curtain hanging in front of the speaker...also i think there might be a hair too much lower mids and a hair too little upper ones...

thanks a lot!

V1 is the left tube when looking at the knobs or if you are looking at the front of the amp with the modules in it.I still don't own an SL but the one I tried sounded great, but I don't recall what tubes were in it.I do like the Jan 5751 in the VX v1 along side an EH v2.

Unless you're trying to sweeten, soften, and gain down the SL, I'd stick with a full power 12AX7 in there.

I've got an NOS oldie in there, and it sounds kickass.

Chinese also sounds good in there.

I find the differences in preamp tubes so minor, I just stick with whatever is in there for now.

I think if you want upper mids, the chinese work real well for that. I'd go Chinese/Tung Sol and try them in different order.

What kind of power tubes you running on my old SL there Rudy?

hi tommy!
i´m running it into a vht 2502 with 6l6´s...i´ve actually changed tubes yesterday to a chinese marshall ecc83 in v1 and an ecc803s in v2. that´s totally different now...it´s great for ac/dc stuff...less lower mids and more upper ones now...the only thing now is, that it´s a liitle too much for my greenback speaker when i play single notes on the neck pickup...i know ít won´t be very easy to become both out of it...ac/dc and also lets say some plexi blues solo-sound a la scott henderson...but i´ve heard plexi marshalls doing also these more sparkly and cleaner solo sounds...also when i tried the randall plexi module in a shop, that sounded really great to these concerns...

do you think i should try kt77 power tubes in the 2502...?

how do you like the cod...? has your amp recovered meanwhile...?
best,
rudi

sorry!!! mistake...of course there are el34´s in the power amp!!! if i knew it´s tecnically o.k., i´d try 6l6´s....does anybody know?

yes marshall used 5881 for a bit when EL34's were very hard to come by....and also 6550s in the JCM 800s quite a bit. Many people (me included) think the best sounding marshalls were ones w/ 6550s! :)

I had a JCM 800 with 6550s but I preferred it with EL34s. JCM800s varied so much though, one would sound good with 6550's and the next one would sound like shit.
