I am posting this for those of us here who are fans of fuzz, Muff, and/or doom metal guitar sounds. I myself love fuzz, but I've always found the new Big Muffs to be a bit weak sounding to say the least. I have grown fond of modifying them back closer to a more 'vintage' Big Muff style sound, while putting my own spin on it. For anyone who has played one and hasn't liked it or was disappointed, there is lots of tweaking power available here as you will see in my clips. Also don't judge the Muff legacy by the new off the shelf Muffs, because like I said they're nothing like the vintage units. Either way, here are some clips which I took after each section of the mod. For now all I have are clips which I took Direct to my DAW, so you are hearing the dry pedal output and not through an amp or mic. I will get amped clips soon, but for now this is all I have. Enjoy.

(Stock off-the-shelf NYC Muff)
(Clipping cap mod)
(Emitter mod)
(Bias mod)
(Fuzz/Feedback mod)
(Grind mod)
(Tone mod + tweaked Bias mod)

All of the modifications are in order and stacked on top of one another, so you are hearing what each change is doing in addition to whatever came before it. This is nearing my vision of the perfect Muff fuzz, but I know more tweaks can and will be made over time. I will post more clips and info when I do.

Keep the doom alive

UPDATE: Amped files are in like sin! I included the dry guitar files through the amp at the time of the reamping so you could get a true feel for a. what the guitar sounds like, and b. what the amp sounds like, to better understand the part that the pedal is playing throughout the mod process.

(Dry Guitars)
(Stock Muff)
(Clipping Cap mod)
(Emitter mod)
(Bias mod)
(Fuzz/Feedback mod)
(Grind mod)
(Tone mod + tweaked Bias mod)

An afterword. I recorded the riff DI into my DAW and then reamped them through the pedal after each modification straight back into my DAW. All of the settings were with every knob at noon. The sound can get quite bassy at this setting, but that's not all that this pedal does and I have recorded another clip which shows another aspect of its personality. Sounds a bit more like a vintage Muff to me.

Here's my SUF VRH clip.

Muffs are so badass. nothing like them in the world.

I am a big big fan of the Ram's Head Muff. My clip above which is labeled (Tone mod) has to do with modifying the tone stack to that of a Ram's Head Muff  I'd love to own an original someday.

As per the thread. I was going to see about modifying the low end response of the pedal because it was a tad bassy in and of itself, but right now I am running my OD808 in the front and that is all the tightening it needs! Total fucking mindblow how good this thing sounds and feels now.

A couple days ago I played all Muff type fuzzes I have now with clean channel of my PT-100. There were LAA Pink Wall, Skreddy Zero, Correct Sound Mad Hatter on Muff channel and Baja Tech Da Moaf. I like Da Moaf most of all bcos of absense of hiss and fizz and bcos it sounds just bigger, as 4x12 versus 2x12 or even 1x12! Zero was #2 during this contest and both sounds great with chords!

Good stuff. I've only played a stock NYC muff. Loved it but it took up too much real-estate. Nice clips.

Yeah, it's not bad, just not for me I guess. The Muffs have a bassy scooped tonality that sets them apart from every other piece of gear. The new NYC designed models have a tighter low end and more midrange. They also have a bit more volume and less gain. It's like a Muff for people who don't like Muff... What's worse is that they still market it as the classic Muff sound, and don't allude to any changes having been made good or bad.

Killer thread!!

I'm a Muff man!! Love me some Muff... Got the Mig Muff Pi w/TW, but keeping my eyes out for some old school models in good shape. Back in the day, I had a bag FULL of stomps that was given to me by my buddy's older sister's boyfriend who was in a fairly well known band back then. I stored all of this shit somewhere, and thought nothing of it - but I see now, on some of the boutique stomp forums, that the stuff that was in that bag (I gotsta find where it is...albeit I've moved about 4 times since then, and this is 30 years ago) is supreme vintage goodness!! Hell, I can't remember which one it was but one of the stomps I was given is worth around $500 now - and at the time, I tossed it aside for the latest and greatest MXR OD that came out...

How some things they change, yet always stay the same. Muff is classic. If you wanna play real rock'n'roll, ya gotsta have a Muff somewhere in the mix

Wicked post!! THANK YOU!!
Mo

Thats why my DIY muff is being built in a 1590B enclosure (kinda like a MXR box)

PM me the schematic you are working off of. I am curious to see what makes a Russo Muff unique.

Got my DIY CW muff built....everyone should own one of these.

I've made a few tweaks since then, and I've got a new clip displaying the mod.
