BK Black Dog vs. MCP Detroiter

I have the Detroiters in a LP. Killer set. Plenty of bite, with a pleasing high end and clean up and split well.

Never tried the black dog PU but I just picked up a MCP Detroiter and love it.

BlackDog is one of my fave BKP pups. Couple it to a Marshall style circuit, it's incredible. Very distinct tone - a lot of nice mids - great cut - great string separation - sounds awesome cleaned up on the volume control - beautiful overtones.

I own a lot of BKPs, and the BD is - out of the bunch - the most distinct in its sound. I love it.

I currently have both.

A Black Dog in one PRS Tremonti and a Detroiter in my other PRS Trenonti.

I made some comparison clips. I'll see if I can find them and upload them somewhere.

Please do!

+1

I have a Black Dog and it's cray-cray.

I remember hearing Mikey's (lowmantotempole) comparison clips between these two a while back. The differences I noticed were the Detroiter is fatter and has a little bump in the mid-mid to low-mid range. I also have the Detroiter and the clip was a very good example of how the Detroiter sounds/react ime. The Black Dog was leaner and had a little more of a bump in mid-mid to upper mids. Honestly, the pickups weren't night and day.

I've never played the Black Dog, but the Detroiter is just such an all around killer pickup. When I had it in my korina Vector it would hang with any LP in terms of size: open and huge. Like someone mentioned above, it's top end is perfect. It has that perfect balance of bite and smoothness, and it cuts through no problem without any icepicks.

I had a Detroiter and loved it but the low end was a little weak in my '76 LP Custom. Loved the output, clarity and high end, but wanted a fuller low end. Also had a 2nd Degree Black Belt but it wasn't fat enough. LOVED the clarity on that one. BK REBEL YELL a bit too much on the high end. I have been Considering a Rio Grande BBQ, BK Black Dog, and a couple of others but just looking for recommedations. My Les Paul has proved quite the challange at the bridge position ever since I took out my Duncan Distortion aiming to go more vintage. Loved how the DD sounded palm muting but the high end fizz got and full time dirt got a little old. I like to open sound and versatility with the hotter PAF'S. Somewhere maybe between the Detroiter and a SD 59

Try an Angel Dust A5!
I have a set Detroiter in an ESP lp and the Angel Dust in a Superstrat with a floyd. The AD has way more push in the low end and is a bit more "bouncy" but cleans up equally well. You may loose a tad clarity because it`s a hotter pickup.
But I think the Detroiter is already a very "full" sounding Pickup.

The Angel Dust A5 kicks ass and is one of my fav pickups. I have a standard one in my Carvin Alder Bolt+, a overwound one going into my Charvel USA 2005 reissue pointy, and possibly the underwound one going in to my MIJ So Cal to replace the Angel Dust A2.

Just dropped a BK Black Dog in my LP..... BLACK DOG wins. Just what my Paul ordered.

Looking to have Wade make me a Detroiter with a ceramic mag. Really looking forward to it :)
