I know these two pickups come highly recommended for dark sounding guitars especially all mahogany ones. What are the tonal differences and similarities between these two for hard rock/80's hair and thrash metal? I know the CS bridge has an ceramic magnet and the Angel Dust bridge an Alnico V magnet and both are touted as mid-output pickups.

We have been discussing some pickups in this category over here:

but the Cold Sweat hasn't popped up in the discussion yet... I think the Rebel Yell is probably closer to the Angel Dust, but I'm not sure.

Yeah I know we were, but just wanted to throw the CS in there. Maybe I give Jerry from Luxxtone a call!! He is great at comparing BKPs and MCPs.

from what I hear and read, the angel dust would be comparable to the rebel yell (I remember you liked it)
the cold sweat is a different animal

that's like comparing Pantera to Steel Panther, tonewise

cold sweat is quite edgy and a bit midscooped on lower mids (not really in a bad way)
still plenty of bass (more than the aftermath, for example) and has a fair amount of upper mids
pinch harmonics sound very clear, but not really fat, which delivers a different taste from other models like the diver or the miracle man

I like these clips:

I have the Angel Dust in a charvel style strat with a Floyd and a set of Detroiters in an ESP Eclipse.
Both are absolutely awesome for the stuff you`re after ;)
Compared to each other the Angel Dust has a little more bass and a lot more mid push to it, where the Detroiter is tighter and has these pissed off hi-mids.
The mids on the Angel Dust are more "centered"
Pinch harmonics are awesome on both too.
No experience with a Cold Sweat, but you certainly won`t be disappointed if you go for an Angel Dust or maybe even a Detroiter. Don`t be fooled because the bridge is "only" about 9,2k. It really pushes the amp enough.

Thanks Eric and Drunken Robot and I do like the RYs very much!!! Great pickups. I actually had a Detroiter (still own) in my Kramer Baretta II and replaced it with a RY. The Detroiter was great, but I wanted a little more bass and less tight of a pickup. The RY does sound awesome!!! It would be perfect if it had a little less sizzle on the top end/more full for the treble strings especially when playing leads. Well that is not why I asked about the CS vs the Angel Dust. I was asking for a dark mahagony guitar and most people recommend the CS or the Angel Dust in this forum to brighten up a darker guitar.

So is the Detroiter more aggressive/ less smooth than the Angel Dust?

I also have a set of Detroiter's in a Gibson SG and agree about those pissed-off upper mids and its tightness, but I'm surprised to hear that the Angel Dust isn't as tight. I heard the Angel Dust is very tight.

The AD is just as aggressive as the Detroiter. The Detroiter may have a slight edge though over the AD, but not by much.

The AD is very tight but slightly more compressed than the Detroiter. Now, the AD A2 is looser though.
