Excellent video. I feel like I learned quite a bit. My BRJ has a "streaked" ebony board that I personally think looks awesome.

Here are some quick pictures of a perfectly 'all black' West African Ebony fingerboard I have...

Myself, I prefer to see colours and stripes which trully bring personality and this is what makes each fingerboards look so unique and to my eyes this has much more value than a fingerboard like this one here which is all black and unpersonal...

i just bought a taylor big baby recently. yes.. the ebony has a few streaks in it.. but i really do like the way it plays.
i live in an area where lots of logging is done.. mostly for the papermaking industry.. but also for veneer logs and cabinet making. how long do you suppose those folks who making a living by logging would last if they didn't utilize sustainable practices? clear cutting not only looks like hell.. it's bad forest management. will the cost of something i buy go up because it's more work to practice sustainability? no doubt. but i'd rather wipe my ass with t.p. made from white aspen than a sears catalog or corn husks.
kudos to mr. taylor.

Most ebony used on fingerboards is dyed anyways. You can buy the dye at Stew-mac, use it on your rosewood if you want :)

Regarding Taylors, I have one that sounds and plays great. The original poster seems to have developed amazing 'tone snob chops' - I wonder if they match his guitar playing chops?

I'd rather have something with character, like Macassar Ebony, than pitch black Madagascar Ebony anyway.

Ok watched the video and read some of the awesome comments...............

I can see why Gibson was nailed twice now and no it is not Obama trying to control industy but a moral issue which Gibson got nailed for due to their idiot fanbois just having to have a pure black board.

Gibson would rather close the doors than buy wood from Taylor...............tell me I am wrong.

So maple feels like plastic?? First I have heard of this.

Funny LP freaks are not posting in this thread...........well Jason has but he has never come off as a snob and plays the shit out of his LPs.

Cool you can buy an LP custom now for $1800 BRAND NEW! do not deny this, Gibson states CUSTOM.

Odds are yes Mr Taylor will charge you extra for all black ebony.

As Pete states if you must play Vogue/cosmo girl then dye the fucking thing.

Superstrat players 90% of the time want maple over rosewood or ebony so win/win for the baked maple.

Old used shit is going up in value gibson wise that have "illegal wood".

Good for Taylor for doing what he is doing.

I have nothing else.

I could be mistaken, but I think the issue with the Federal Government was over Indian Rosewood, not Madagascar Ebony.

Well aware of this thanks but Customs used to use ebony. They now used baked maple that for some reason when gibson touches it turns to plastic.

I don't know why Gibson doesn't just buy the ebony from Taylor but I bet they are either to proud or too cheap. Either way Gibson sucks and I would rather buy used any day then what they are pushing off on us now. Its gotta be tough to be Taylor and a guitar lover and have to make the tough calls concerning the wood, I probably would do the same as I couldn't see wasting 18 out of every 20 ebony trees.
