Both great amps but who would the winner be...
Bogner 20th Anniv Shiva vs Suhr PT-100??

Styles and types of music covered.. Hot rodded marshall tones, 80's rock, Doug Aldrich, Andy Timmons, Modern Hard Rock (not metal or new metal), fenderish cleans, nice warm lead tone that cuts. Any opinions welcome  Thanx guyz

I can't really comment on the Shiva, but I have tried the CAE PT in the 50w version. I was awestruck at the amount of versatility in the amp for sure. The cleans were very Fenderlike, with lots of snap and brightness, but still a bunch of pure clean headroom. It also was nice and full and I didn't feel it needed modulation, or delay/reverb to make it sound 'better.' The dirty channel is like a slightly more refined sounding Marshall. It definitely still has that pissed off British character, but this amp almost takes it and reigns it in a bit. It definitely had more than enough gain once you hit the halfway mark for the seventies and eighties rock thing, but you could also do more modern tones with ease. I also liked the feedback control and Whomp II switch on the back... the feedback control allowed the sound to almost go from a more modern, tighter tone to a looser, more vintage type of sound. The Whomp II switch basically added more bass and such and made the 2x12 I was using sound and feel like a 4x12 half stack which was great. It was also really great for lead work, very cutting and articulate in that British voiced way, but also really responsive to dynamics or playing subtleties. Hope this helps!

I havn't played the Suhr but I would not consider the Shiva 20th a hot rodded Marshall. It really is it's own sound and feel. It doesn't have the high mids of a Marshall. It has a fairly tight low end. It has a creamy thick tone. It's not a biting amp but will cut well. The mids are just glorious and unique. I can just about dime the controls if I wanted and it still sounds great. It can be dialed in many ways. The cleans have a great feel and tone to them. Again they are there own thing. They do not remind me of a Fender, but they are really nice. There are members that have played both. The Shiva is getting a little hype now that the word is out it is not what you would expect.

Everyone who owns a Bogner will tell you Shiva, all the usual Suhr suspects are going to tell you CAA. Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

I have owned them both. Gary is spot on with the 20th Shiva. For the versatility that you are looking for, the OD-100, either a PT or SE+ will better suit you. Its cleans are designed around a Fender. Its gain comes in two stages and with the whomp control on back, you can dial it up modern or vintage type structures. The gain is assignable and foot switchable too. So, for what you are wanting, its Suhr all the way.

Thanks again guyz for all the input. Much appreciated. Decision time will follow soon. Cheerz

I'm in the midst of mulling over dumping my amps, preamps etc and just getting another PT-100...Waiting for a tubes up midified version (or whatever format they decide on?) But....Might have to settle for the "tubes in wrong" version since I have no patience so...my vote is the PT-100

I'm siding with the Mighty Sheevs... I'm actually thinking the next go round of funds may go to one.

Just sayin'

lol King Loudness. If John, Ed, Shon and the rest of the boyz and girls at Suhr put 1/2 the effort into their amps that they do their guitars...then I know the pt100 would kick ass. I have no question the build quality and direction of their tone...as well as with Bogner... it's just time to find 'what' tonal qualities I desire and which amp will give it to me. I am a fan of the Aldrich, Reb Beach, Slash, Bettencourt, etc sound...which lends itself towards a more hot rodded marshall...I do however dig Andy Timmons, Andy Wood, Gilbert, Sfogli, etc..so want to make sure that the amp is versatile as well. The boyz at Suhr have been nothing but good to me so far so I am leaning towards the PT100... however, the 20th XTC has been a pleasure so the Shiva is still waiting right there in the wings. If funds were no option, I would run the 2 in stereo..however, there can only be one so it's now back to the what is best for me for the next few years. Thanx again for all your input and opinions. I've got time...and still have to sell my 20th XTC b4 I can move forward, sideways, or whatever direction I'll be moving. Cheerz

Hey man,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you selling your 20th Ecstasy to fund this new amp? If that's the case I would definitely grab the PT100. The Shiva's are killer amps, but I have a feeling it'll just remind you of the Ecstasy in some ways (namely the feel of the amp when you're playing.) If you're going to sell the Bogner, you may as well try something different if you're replacing it. Just my $.02 though. That being said, my G.A.S for a CAE PT50 or 100 is through the roof, so I'm only SLIGHTLY biased... :D

I have not owned or played a 20th Shiva but I have owned an EL34 Shiva and really liked the amp. The cleans were outstanding. The 2nd channel was nice but I thought it was missing something. I now have a PT100 and love it. Great cleans and ch2/ch3 are incredible, with the womp selector and the feedback knob it is very easy to dial it in from a good range of characteristics. So my vote is for the PT100, having said that you should also look at the Bogner Ecstasy and the Cameron CCV.

Well, IN MY DEFENSE, there's 3 racks left (funny that) in my new rig's case, and I wanted something completely and utterly all-comprehensive/fully configurable in the sense of FX for the associated unit (Mak4 and poweramp) AND the potential of porting some of these "much touted" AFX-U simus/etc into the poweramp and cab. That's it, that's all... I've been toying with the notion for quite sometime, I figured I'd already blown several grand on the set up, what's another $2K to polish it off :dunno:

The rack is compact, configurable, totally adjustable, and offering tons of flexibility...this additional unit (AFX-U) is the cherry on top. No head/amp needed right now, just more figuring out my latest acquisition :D

Da Pimp is not pleased :scared:

PS - and the DI capabilities are appealing, er, "intriguing" to say the least. But I'm going in thinking I'll test it, and it'll get sent back - I'm not 100% convinced, but I need to find things out for myself.

FWIW , I just traded a 20th Shiva for a PT100. And , like so many of you , I'm finding myself lurking around this forum , while I'm in fact Jonesing to get my new amp. I was hesitant to order it , since the new ( looks like a hundred other "Plexi style" , midi controllable ) version is soon to be released , but I couldn't wait any longer to decide if I preferred it to the original.

The 20th Shiva didn't get me there. Records well. Pretty. Hated playing in front of the 4x12 though. V30's , Greenbacks , - didn't matter. G-backs sounded better , but not good enough. Lacked pick dynamics too. It didn't have the "feel" of a 5153. I (almost) traded it for a 20th Xtc. :D Glad now I didn't.

The guys at Suhr have been top notch , BTW. - I've convinced myself , ordering the original PT100 was a good idea. I honestly never liked the "tubes upside down" look , but , seems EVERYBODY is making a Plexi style boutique amp these days. Dime a dozen. (if a dime were $3000). AND , when the head is on my 4x12 , the controls will be higher to see and tweak. ;)
