Apples and Oranges, in my book.

I'd say based on what you seem to be looking for, the PT100 would be it; very nice amp. My favorite Suhr product, without a doubt.

Damn, thats alot of good info. I would be selling my 20th XTC to fund this new amp...absolutely Love the the XTC but want to move in a slightly different direction. Like I said, my ears love the cutting mid rip of a modded marshall sound so thats kinda where I want to head without losing the versatility I loved so much in my 20th XTC. Quickrods have a great channel 2 but the cleans and versatility leave a bit to be desired..plus there master pots are touchy as hell...especially solo boost. I've heard a few people mention the 5153... I've always disliked 5150/6150 so never considered the 5153...maybe its something I should consider?? I do have a potential dude that may trade his PT100 + cash for my XTC so that may be the way to go..he is still undecided as well. Damn gas...damn forum :D you guys all kik ass tho. Thanx again for the opinions.

I myself am debating between a PT50 and a new Quick Rod... it's a matter of more versatile, better cleans, and a slightly more refined distortion channel (PT) vs a generally more pissed off sounding British distortion channel with more gain options, but a weaker clean channel (QR). Granted, to get a new QR to my door would be a few hundred less than a PT, but there's also the wait time to contend with...

As far as the 5150 III goes... I've dug the ones I've tried, but I did find them a bit scooped in the midrange frequencies, especially with the EVH 4x12. YMMV though. Your best bet would be to try one and decide if the voicing and feel are what you're looking for.

So in this choice have you tried or considered a Schmidt? Less power but I think you can put in any power tubes you want. Out f'ing rageous clean channel in the Schmidt. A decent Tele in to it is a beautiful thing. Of course there is all the rock/hair metal/blues inside. The verb is decent too.

Just sayin... and no, I am not selling a Schmidt :)

As far as 5150 vs 5153 go , they aren't even close.
5150/6505 = sizzle , high gain that won't clean up.
5153 = actual early VH tones channel 2 (untweakable) , clean 1 , and too distorted 3rd channel.
PT100 is SUPPOSED to get 5153 channel 2 tones , with more adjustability , and better pick dynamics.

Hope so !

Funny thread - these are the two amps that we're using in my band. So I hear them back to back on a weekly basis.

I play a 20th Shiva (loaded with EL34s), and the other guitarist Matt (EWSEthan) plays the PT100. Both are amazing amps. And both actually blend really well together.

First of all, the stock 20th Shiva with KT88s is just not going to sound "traditional" in any way. It sounds mean, aggressive, and has a much harder attack than the Standard EL34 Shiva. I opted to load EL34s into my 20th Shiva, to get more of that classic EL34 feel, but still keep the features of the 20th (gain modes, resonance control, etc).

The PT100 has much more of a traditional Marshall/Fender voicing for the dirty and cleans. A little more cutting in the high mids, and much more of a big, Fender Twin blackface tone on the cleans. I had the pleasure of watching Matt's other band play one time, and sit directly in front of the PT100, and the cleans are just drop dead gorgeous. Shimmery, swirly, with absolutely no modulation needed.

The My EL34 20th Shiva has that signature Bogner mid/low mid thing going on, which is a very love/hate thing.

I'm going to just say what I did before - if you have a reputable builder in your area and have been working in music long enough to know what you want, get something built for you specifically. Once you start spending anywhere near 3000, you may as well spend the extra and get exactly what you want.

Although admittedly, I've seen more than one fickle gear pig that likes to get stuff, try it out and then wander elsewhere when distracted by something shiny. If that's you, then continue to buy off the rack, or else you'll hemorrhage money on every deal you make. :D

This gear pig :) lives far enough away from civilization , that trying out quality gear isn't usually an option before money changes hands. I will say , my 20th Shiva had KT88's. That's what It was originally designed by Reinhold to have. ( probably would have suited my taste better with EL34's though ).
