Hey guys.. I found this Bogner Alchemist online for 399.00 .. It's the head version, but I can't tell how many watts. It's here: http://www.musicgoround.com/p/246460/us ... emist-head

Can anyone tell me how good these heads are? Will they do clean ? Will they do Metal as in 80's metal or would you need a pedal? I'm trying to stay away from another clean amp that I'd need a boost or distortion pedal with. I'd rather have an amp that is really made for metal, but that has a "OK" clean amp. I'm thinking about using 2 amps for such a setup and use one for clean and one for distortion, and the latter being an amp head like this.. Any thoughts or reviews of this would be great.. Any comments on reliability, etc,. tone, etc,..

Thanks
T

Check the youtube site in my sig. I did a few demos of it both with and without pedals. That's a great price.

THANKS Bob, I will when I'm off work.. Appreciate it big time!

I had one for awhile.
This was as I understand part of the deal for Bogner designing the power section for Line 6 for their Spider Valve amps. The Alchemist was designed by Bogner but built in Line 6's Chinese manufacturing facility.
I had no reliability issues with mine.
I think you can make it work for 80s metal but you will want an EQ or really bright speakers. The amp is quite dark.
I ended up selling it because tonally it just didn't do anything special for me.
That's not to say you won't love it, there are some good tones in there, they just weren't my thing.

Bought 1 new from GC for $499. It was ok. Cleans and mid gain were ok, high gain just didn't do it for me.

I actually like this amp...Dark and Chewy. Not a high-gain monster by any stretch. Better amp than many give it credit for in my opinion...Especially when paired with a brighter / tighter high gain amp. Just my opinion.

I have seen them cheaper than that on craigslist.

^ no warranty though :dunno:

+1

I'd prolly hit it if you really like it. That said, I much prefer the Peavey Vypyr tube 60. I got mine for $315 and I've seen them on Craigslist for $250.

Hey 311 Splawn Dude..
I'm not able to quote you and write you back directly as my mac now isn't working with quoting someone .. Before it was not working with replying or just coming to RT in that it would take me to the mobile pages where everything was made to display on a mobile page. Anyway, I'm assuming it isn't working because I'm on a mac book pro, but I wanted to say.. I like peavey stuff since I've had it when I was a kid. I had a Ranger 2 x 12 tube amp that was every bit as good as any Fender twin.. and was louder than any other amp I've ever owned. It was 120 watts and had more clean head room than anything I've personally experienced..

I like Peavey, but I'm wondering about the vyper line with tubes. I mean, don't they just use modeling to get the high gain tones? I'd rather just use all tubes or tubes and solid state analogue, but not modeling at all..
Thanks I'll look into them.. at that price one can't go wrong.. I agree..

^ Hey

The Vypyr uses modeling but it is analog modeling based on their Transtube technology. Only the time based 'loop' type effects are digital. My favorite amp models are the Twin (for cleans) and the Recto or Deizel VH4 (for dirt). The tubed version is much better to my ears than the all SS little brothers.

Here is a sample of the what the 'Brit' model w/reverb sounds like. Not sure what you play mostly.

The Alchmist is a pretty decent amp for the price - don't get me wrong. I wouldn't bother with the combo, the head is where it is at. The built in reverb and delay work really well with this amp too. I'm just saying if I had to chose between a $250 used Peavey Vypyr 60 combo and a $399 Alchemist - I'd take the Vypyr. I normally play metalcore type stuff and the Vypyr really excels there. The Vypyr is not as good for low/mid gain tones. It sounds killer on the Diezel model in stereo with teh Splawn :D

As far as your web page viewing issue are you sure it does not say 'Switch to PC Style' or something at the bottom center of the page? Ie - make sure you are not in mobile view while on your PC.

Hey dude.. :-)

Yeah, it says switch to full style or something at the bottom of the page..I do that, but it first takes me to the mobile style page when I first come to the site. www.rig-talk.com and then I have to scroll down and hit the link that says full site, or whatever it says. This hasn't happened lately I don't think. It's odd, it only does it I think when I clear my cache or something. Weird.. I'm on a mac book pro at home of course when this happens, but it doesn't happen on my Chrome book of course or PC.

Vyper Tube sounds good man. I'll have to check them out as I've always liked Peavey! I live in rural area though and would have to find one in the big city so to speak..hehe..
Thanks man..

Vypyr amps are digital. They say that it's analog, but I think it's digital. Peavey's statement said something along the lines of it being analog to digital, and back to analog, or something like that. To my ears it just sounds way too compressed for an analog signal. I've owned several solid state Peavey amps like the XXL, Transtube EFX HD 100, and Bandit - and they all sound much more 'organic' than the Vypyr 30 I have, and even the Vypyr Tube 60 I had prior. Tube versions are better but still have that same core tone. Don't get me wrong they're great as a go-to amp at home, but Peavey's Transtube amps sound more like tube amps than the Vypyr.

The Vypyr's amp modeling and stompboxes are analog. The only part that is digital are the
Loop/rack type effects. The Tube Vypyr's power section is lifted right from the 6505. The Vypyr's
use Transtube technology. What else would you like to know?
