A couple of things about the Burnley. First of all, I would agree that it's too dark, except for some weird reason it doesn't necessarily record that way. Somehow it cuts through in recordings beautifully even though when you're playing it sounds rather dark. I wouldn't necessarily say it's dark as much as it's thick. The tone knob at 12:00 isn't high enough, but you can get a nice presence between 2 and 3:00. The pedal feels a bit stiff or something, and it doesn't really get that liquid feel until the gain is nearly maxed out. The Suhr Riot Reload on the other hand has a nice shreddy feel to it at any gain level.
Between the two, the Suhr would get more play time on my board. The Burnley is like one of those pedals you keep on the side because you know you'll want it every now and then. I traded my Burnley for a Wessex since I mainly like to drive my amp distortion a little. It doesn't have near the gain of the Burnley, but it's a bit more open. The Burnley gain really doesn't do it for me until it's in the 1:00-5:00 range, and that's where it shines for the most part.
Basically, the Burnley is great with bright Fenders,EL84 amps, Mesa Boogies, and bright Marshall setups as far as I'm concerned. The Suhr is a great pedal all around and you'll love it, but there is a certain quality in the Burnley which eludes me to describe. If you want a sure thing, then the Suhr. If you want something unique that records magically, then the Burnley.
