Inspired by the SLO modern tones thread, I'm interested in seeing how well an Ecstasy will do for modern rock/metal stuff. Im GASsing for a 101b and want to see what it's capable of.

Here's a band I've played with before, and I think Tim's setup sounded great

Any more/better examples?

Lolzgreg posted a cool 101b clip (unboosted) doing metal awhile back. Sounded great.

Also, there's a ton of Bogner Ecstasy tone all over the Sevendust albums.

Play "Evangeline" the last song on the list.

Bogner 101b.

Sounds really good. Red channel I assume?

I wasn't aware of Cantrell using Ecstasy amps - I knew he used a lot of Bogner modded Marshalls, and for a short while used an Uber and Alchemist live.

Sevendust used 101b's? I thought they used Mesa Mark series for the majority of their albums.

I'm on the fence on getting a 101b or an SLO. I think I'm leaning heavily on the 101b . . .

Actually, it's the Blue channel, doubled. Solo is the Red channel. And THANKS!!

They're very different. I own both and love both, but for the majority of my gigging, I take the Ecstasy.

I was a bit worried the Blue channel wasn't heavy enough, but looks like I'm pleasantly surprised. :)

Blue channel boosted can do heavy for sure. Also red channel unboosted is a killer rhythm tone as well.

Yeah, that clip "Evangeline" is Blue Channel (2 tracks. . .possibly 4 tracks - I can't remember). I can't remember exactly, but it's also probably thru two different cabinets to get different speaker coloration (I think it was a Bogner Uberkab, and a Marshall silver jubilee cab).

We probably used a couple different guitars to change the tone slightly and give it some separation. I think I remember using my Les Paul and GMP Firebird on this song. The solo section is a Tom Anderson Drop Top, on the Red Channel (boosted).

7D use so many amps on an album that it's tough to pick one tone out of it. Clint has used a Mark IV on pretty much everything he's ever recorded (mostly for layered melodic parts and leads) but the tight, heavy rhythm sounds are definitely not a Mark. They use Duals, Marks, Randalls, Marshalls, Ubers, XTC, Orange, VHT Pitbull, Diezel VH4....the list goes on.

Their sound comes from layering and production and of course, the way they play aggressively.

Here's the meat of what I'm after. If the 101b can do this, I'm sold on it. The intro to this song ranks way up there with my fav guitar tones of all time.

"My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" performed by Steve Vai off the G3 album (audio version)

Now, I know Vai used a 100b and an Egnator TOL-100 on that tour, but not sure how it was set up (used one amp and the other for backup, or both at the same time).

No clips, but I spent last year gigging an XTC Classic and VHT UL for modern rock/metal gigs and I chose to take the XTC out 2-1 over the UL. More character and warmth.

Anyways... this year I'm with an even more "modern" (drop-tuned to Bb on several songs) metal band and I'm way digging my Engl Powerball 2 for that stuff. But would still have no problem using my XTC for it if I still had it. In fact, my DSL50 is my backup to the Engl and it's great.
