I am just curious to see what owners of both or those that have played through both would say in terms of sounds they can do very well, and sounds they can not do very well. Is there any sound or tone that these two preamps when coupled with a nice poweramp can't do??

I didn't care too much for the Shark channel on the Fish. It was too woofy sounding to my ears. Which basically means I didn't find the Fish to be the best pre if you're looking to switch between clean, crunch and dirty/grinding/lead in the same unit. I basically only used the Country and Brown channels on it. YMMV.

Oh, so to be specific: I didn't find the mid-gain tones on the Fish to be very inspiring.

I had the Fish clean modded, a Canrell mod and 2 brown channels - so I liked it then

I prefer the CAE 3+ non SE version. More organic and open. Basically an X88 tone I feel.

Thanks for the feedback fellas'. I was just curious to see what others feel/think/ etc as it is always neat to hear other peoples perspective on something so volatile as tones.

I have recently acquired a cae 3+se preamp and it is quite early in the "i just bought it " phase but so far i am liking its modern voicing and tighter response than the fish. The fish really is a distinct cool tone and the brown channel kicks at higher volumes no doubt, the strato and shark are neat but moreso for lead tones to my ears. The clean is ... well.. clean.

The 3+SE is incredible, it is the best clean i've had, the ch2 tones are very surprising and ch3 is awesome! I love the active eq switchable volume/treb/bass for usability for lead boosts etc. I think i prefer the cae +3 SE thus far!

Pretty sure the CAE was still unable to make anyone like Vince Sansevere...not sure about the Fish though.

For me, the fish does both the cleans and hi gain dirt well (country and brown). The
country channel has a nice "spank" to it that makes me wish I could chicken-pick worth
a damn. The brown channel has a nice midrange thick grind that really makes notes "push"
themselves forward (with my lack of technique, it helps).

Took me a long time to bond with the shark channel but recently it's become
my favorite channel on it. It's my mid gain "old school" go to channel that really
responds to the guitar volume dynamically. Can go from kinda vox dirt/clean to loose
non master marshall with the guitar volume.

To date, the strato channel is still worthless to me. Don't like the hi-presence sound of
it and for some reason, it reminds me of r.e.m. (and I hate r.e.m.)... I keep thinking I can
get some brighter crunchy/jangly low/mid gain sounds out of it but as of yet, it's hopeless...

Whew, I need a beer now.

bigdaddyd, i have no idea what you are insinuating.

HS, I hear that, thanks for the contribution to the thread.

Yeah I felt the same way about my fish, as much as I wanted to dig it I much prefer my XTC 20th to almost all the tones on the fish. It;s my main rig these day and it kills for what I need. Ran the fish into a Simul 395 Mesa. I also had a Triaxis in the rack and could switch between the 2 and I didnt feel the Fish lived up to the price and billing for me. I could get as good/better tones from the Triaxis believe it or not. Traded my Fish to Brad to help pay for my Friedman BE100 so that says alot.If I dug it, it wouldnt have gone anywhere

I let my Fish go when they started bringing top dollar and I realized that I didn't think it sounded any better than my MP-1...seriously.
