May possibly be trading up for a Bogner Shiva (not a 20th Anniversary)...but unsure if it can get high gain modern metal tones...without boosting. Any advice?

The regular old Shiv needs a boost of some kind to get metal tonez from my experience with the one I owned for a short while, I really liked it blended with my old Recto for straight up modern rocks type stuff..... The 20th would get you closer to metal or better yet get a Uber.

This is RT's own Big Rich playing a shiva with no boost.

Damn that sounds great, the one I had didn't come close to that much gain.

An Uber is my first choice for sure, but a Shiva has been thrown my way as a trade option. Can the Shiva get me Cantrell like tones? I think he used to run those. I know he ran Uberschalls for the heavier stuff, and may still do so to this day. I dig his tone. I'm looking for an amp that can capture great hard rock tones, but also get into metal territory before it starts to sound like mush.

Yeah bro, I came across that clip the other day. But I keep hearing the same thing...that others can't believe how much gain he is getting out of it...maybe his is a fluke?

Maybe it's the EMG's? Something's up because not even the 20th I owned had that much gain. For old school metal I thought the 20th was ok, but I still thought it needed a boost. When I think metal the Shiva isn't the first amp I think of but for Cantrell stuff it's a good choice.

The standard Shiva can do some metal, but it is not the first amp I think of when it comes to metal and it depends on the type of metal.

If you want a Bogner for metal, the Uber (or Twin Jet) is the logical, and only choice. No pedals required. Why force an amp like a Shiva to do something it isn't designed to do? The 20th Shiva is a fine amp with some nice, buttery high gain tone. But, not metal.

100% agree.

I found the gain on the 20th Shiva is much more focused than the fizzy, too hairy gain structure of any era Uber. For technical metal, Shiva 20th hands down. For sludgy doom, nu metal, Uber is a better choice. I guess it depends what kind of metal we're talking about.

There are far better amps to use for modern metal. Even with a pedal in front, the sag of the Shiva is not going to "feel" metal.

I didn't find the gain on the Uber I had to be fizzy or hairy at all. I wonder if it's because I used less gain on the amp than you were?

Sorry, I meant fuzzy, not fizzy. Don't get yourself into a tizzy about it. Ubershcall gain is rather fuzzy sounding at all levels IMO.

Strange, I thought the gain was very smooth. Just goes to show...

I owned a regular Shiva for about 6 months and couldn't get it to sound anything like the above clip and certainly wouldn't do metal. Witha boost it still didn't sound great for metal. I've tried the 20th a few times in GC and while it gets much more agressive and can certainly do SOME metal, as has been said, it wouldn't be my first choice.

20th Sheevs has a lot of gain on top, almost too much. But whether or not it'll get you where you wanna go with 'metal', not sure. It'll do 80s and early 90s 'metal' quite easily.

TwinJet would slay in this case.

IMHO, YMMV,
Mo
