Bon Jovi and Sambora…

Don't know how many Bon Jovi fans are in here, but I was just listening to some older stuff. What happened to this band? I know it has always been “jon’s band”, but how watered down can you get?!?!?!? Slippery When Wet was the album that made me want to play guitar. I was 8 when it came out and even though I was digging Van Halen, Def Lep and Journey, something about Prayer and Dead or Alive really connected with me.

Over the years, as their sound changed, I loved it!!! New Jersey, Keep the Faith, These Days, Bounce, Crush are fantastic albums… even Lost Highway was awesome. But ever since Have a Nice Day, all of their songs seem regurgitated. Each album has had a few decent songs, but nothing as good as the earlier albums. You could literally put the songs from each album in a blender and pull out 12 and that could be an album for them.

When Phil X was introduced to the band, I thought he would add a shot of intensity and rock back into their sound. He is such a monster player and huge talent(not to mention hilarious in interviews). Nope… sadly, they don’t utilize him at all. It’s so sad. I even read that he didn’t play much on their latest album. Most of the guitar was covered by the song writer that Jon has been writing with… balls.

If the music of Bon Jovi was what inspired me as a song writer, then Sambora was my biggest hero. Don’t get me wrong… I loved Vai, EVH, Eric Johnson and players like that, but something about Sambora’s blend of blues, melody and some speed really spoke to me as a guitar player. Over the past few days, I’ve been listening to his solo albums and older BJ. Wow… he was on fire and really wanted it. It seemed like he really connected to the music.

Now when I see him in recent vids(and even the last few years with BJ), he was just mailing it in. I can’t even find a recent vid of him on YouTube without him seeming like he was on something. Such a waste of talent. I’m really hoping he doesn’t pull Orianthi down into whatever hole he’s in.

Bon Jovi should just do corporate fund-raising gigs.

Last time I saw them Richie was still there, but I've never been so bored at a concert in my life. The Bounce tour was meh, but the Crush tour was flat out hard to watch.

I never did hear why Sambora was out of Bon Jovi. Did he just leave or was he pushed out because of other issues?

Popular story was money. Back story was chemical.

It's always money... easier split 3 ways than 5.

It's Jon's Band & has a huge say in the direction....He's an admitted control freak. I think they are terrible now, I saw them months ago & I was bored. The high light of the whole night was watching chicks bounce up & down all night...including my wife(BJ is her favorite band)

His voice is shot and he knows it. Listen to anything recent. He has changed his singing style to accommodate his lack of voice and it does not sound good. Can't see him going on much longer. Sambora is a drunk and has enough money now to tell JBJ to fuck off.

So true. He sounded "ok" in concert but can't hit any high notes at all. He has enough Money...he should just walk away now.

I don't think it's about his voice. It's lack of energy and attitude. Unfortunately that's true for both Jon and Ritchie. Damn even the keyboards are lame/not existent anymore. Imho NJ was their last great record. keep the faith had strong moments, but was already the try to become a songwriter band. They don't want to be a rock band anymore. Their choice, but for sure I miss the old version...

He did do a lot of country collaborations lately...

That's what everybody thinks is the next big thing. Not sure it will work, but who am I.

It's really Jon solo. With Phil X. Phil is a great guy and I'm very happy for him. And Jon treats him great from what I hear! Part of me wanted Ritchie to go in the studio and keep Phil live. But whatever.

I was referring to Jons voice, not Ritchie just to be clear.

I thought I read that Ritchie gets paid whether he's on the tour or not because he's a full partner in the BJ corporation. Seems to me, if he can't tour due to his substance issues, but gets paid either way, he and JBJ are better off using Phil X, who gets a meager salary by comparison, but is gonna bring it every night. If Ritchie were to bomb the first few shows, it'd spell doom for ticket sales later on.

I used to like them back in the 80's and 90's. They've put out a lot of great music but I just can't stand Jon Bon Jovi anymore! I turn the station whenever their songs come on the radio. JBJ just comes across as a pompous, liberal elitist.

Sambora...used to be a pretty good guitar player and musician but is now a sloppy, arrogant, has been that's resting on his success from 20 years ago.

...both of them should just go away!

We went to a Bon Jovi show back in 2010. My daughter actually fell asleep in her seat and only woke up when she heard the talkbox start up for "Livin' on a Prayer". Most boring show I've ever seen.

In high school I was a big Bon Jovi fan and that was even before "Slippery When Wet" came out. I used to play 7800 Fahrenheit (on tape) over and over. Such a great album. Bon Jovi is a Pop-Country band now IMO. Every song has to have this same catchy line or have an arena feel like "We, will, be the best!!" or some crap.

That band is basically gone. Every once in awhile they come up with a good song but the well is dry.

I can appreciate their Pop writing skills, Johns' cleaver lyrics and Richies' tones but neither have ever appealed to me. I find the band lacklustre, and both come across like wankers.

Like mentioned above, this has nothing to do really with Ritchie Sambora. Jon could have used this as a fresh start to get back to some rockin' stuff.
Nobody is telling them to go back completely to only hard rock, because they have always had that balance. Now it just seems that they will have one rock song and then the rest are everything but rock. Like I said, I don't see the need for every song to have the most catchy chorus in history.
