I have followed his videos for 7 years or so. Based on his vid's I bought two OD100's. Some guitar player from Ratt was selling his main and backup tour amps.  After watching his latest video's I am starting to hear mark sounding more like himself. Is that a good thing? He was great a cloning other players styles but like phil x now kinda has his own style. Todd Duene, toneking, gearmandude and sgtThump come to mind. When I hear mark play a BE-100. Too me it doesn't sound like a BE-100 but one played by Mark. Playing one myself in person the amp is so different. I dig in, play sloppy and bend differently than mark.

IMHO Video clips and audio demo's are utterly useless. I will drive lots of hours but I can't bring myself to buy a amp based off how it sounded when someone else played it. Am I crazy?

PS. no bone to pick with mark really, killer tone and player as we all know a nice guy. So while I am not discounting his hard work showcasing equipment for us, I also think there should be a disclaimer if you buy this Brown Eye, you might not sound like Mark.

Good point. The OD-100 didn't make me blow my load at all. I liked the lead channel but the rest was a little too woofy for me. I needed more cut. MArk sounds good with an axe to atomica to BE to whatever! Tone is in the hands!

Wait a minute....so you're saying that what works well for one player, might not be the best choice for all other players?

We must find a way to alert the community!

This thread was an admirable start, but what about the rest of the musicians out there?

Go forth, and spread the word!

This is called throwing the baby out with the bath water. Look it up.

Wait - so you're saying it's the PLAYER and NOT the AMP!? Shit! We all better start practicing huh?

If this revelation came to me today after all these years I'd be too embaressed to admit it.

I would like to see more Reputable mom and pop shops open up every where and put GC and online sale out of Biz in general. I have also been burned many times buy something I thought sounded awesome in clips, only to realize post eq and compression played a major role in the output sound(this has been mostly with pedals from pro guitar shop really.) A fuzz that might sound smooth and chewy was way harsh when I got it home. Turned out when I rolled off the tone 2 spots and played would my fingers I was able to recreate the tone I heard on youtube. However not playing that way normally I ended up selling it. I've gone thru 50 different stomp boxes over the years which is close to the rest of us I would think.

What online demo's do is give you this false sense in trusting what you hear in the vid is what you will hear at home. Before when it was mark and the rest of us just showing our stuff for our own gain. Now the past couple years it is now used too Sell merch for online companies. Is amp demo's now blurring the line between a infomercial or just honest to goodness fair demo's.

I saw a metal demo' of a amp that shall remain nameless and has nothing to do with mark day, friedman or cameron amps. However this said demo was featuring how evil the amp would sound. With a DAW mid cut of 6+ dB of 400hz low mid reduction is dishonest to me. They show they DAW screen shot for a split second and I kinda find that shady in a fine print sort of way. Just wanted to get your thoughts. And mark's as well. I mean i guess I just would see less pimping of products from sellers and more clips by unbiased players like it was.

If your with me so far, I guess if these video's are now for profit, should they be held to the same standards? I won't buy online anymore, its just not worth it in the long run. I think this helps not hurts in the long run.

I am shocked you don't find this a good thing. Maybe not seeing the implications. I watch mark day to see him play now, I don't care what he happens to be playing into. It's a revelation to listening to the tone and start listening to the player. When I do that, alot of amps just have a lot less detail and the player has more involvement. I intended this to be a joking comment.

your desired disclaimer is a given. Every guitarist should already know that. Best example is the whole VH tone and Mark (rockstah) If you cant play like that, it doesnt matter how much you spend or search.

I've got it!!!! We need Tipper Gore!!!

I'm going to chime in here, because I make a lot of videos demoing amps, or film others demoing amps (incl. the aforementioned Mr. day.)

Everyone has a formula , pickups, string gauge. Setup, settings on the amp, speakers, mic placement, signal chain.

Your only gonna get the sound like the video if you recreate ALL those things. (Including the guitar cable) and even then it's going to be different because of the most important factor.

Your hands.

Agreed, which is why whenever I see someone asking for "settings" I just want to laugh. Such a misguided way to get where you want.

What's hilarious is I went to Portland for the day a month or so ago to check out the stores and PGS was one of my stops (nice guys there). So I got to try a pedal in person, and through the Orange OR15 I was using it was fantastic. I drive home (Seattle area) and it sounds like shit through my Stiletto   I mailed it back . Guess I should have dragged my Mesa around for the day. I remember one time wanting a pedal for my '78 2203. A store that had a few to try had a used '78 2203 that I used to demo the pedals. Found a winner. Wrong. Sounded very different through my 2203. Had to take my head to the store and re-do the demo's.

I see what you're saying but have to somewhat disagree...at least in part. Although one person's settings may not be ideal for another, they can certainly be a great starting point for helping a "newbie" with that particular amp find his own settings...especially with notoriously "tricky to dial in" amps like a Mark V.

Yet there is a "BE-100 Settings" thread down in the Friedman subforum that has been getting a LOT of attention lately....
