After years of chasing high gain from the chassis only I found some specific pedal combinations that work for me personally none of them boutique either.

I almost always ended up boosting the high gain amps, either by turning the amp gain on the high gain channel down or by using the "medium" gain channel and boosting regardless.

Spent alot of money to find that out...lol.
What are your favs. Tubescreamers and clones are just not cutting it for me. Maybe one with no tone controls would be better.

Considering the gear you own/owned is way above my pedestrian stuff you've probably already been there/done that long ago.

But a medium gain Marshall or Marshall-esque type crunch set as a foundation tone, layered with an overdrive and an eq pedal of some sort into the front end does it for me for the higher gain applications.

Nothing special with the pedals, I like a tubescreamer type (OD-9) or a run of the mill SD-1 have used countless others in the past though. Then it's the mixing of whatever overdrive you like with an EQ (I have a few Boss EQ pedals) for the final high gain (also through the front end). That's just me though, I know I'm most likely in the minority.

I may try this with an EQ to see if I can dial things in. What I usually find is the pedals with my gains lower are not nearly as good than with my gains up and no pedal. I used to always boost my higher gain which is why maybe I am coming back to it.

You don't need one pedal, you need two. Go guitar --> Tube Screamer --> BOSS SD-1 --> front of amp.

Run the drive on the TS low but the level high. Dial in the SD-1 to taste. Rock out :rawk:

Wouldn't this be hiss and then squeal city when I stopped playing. The way my amps are now I can have a loud high gain tone but no squealing when I stop playing controlling with both hands. If it squeals I balance out my pickup height and gains a little until I hit that spot. I hate noise gates and do not need one.

See, and I'm the opposite.
After years of boosting high gain amps, I finally stopped and re evaluated my approach, changed some things and only use the amps gain now. With equal or greater success.

I like two different amps to create width. Same note but doifferent voiced amp sounds wide. Cabs apart as well!

I have gone with wet dry and a parametric EQ in the wet loop. Just hit it for a tone shift and it just feels wider.

As others have mentioned I like the lower compression character of the lower gain channels, but boost them a bit to have the burn with some bounce.

YMMV

I KNOW that's not what you want, but with your description that's where my mind goes.

Sorry, my mind started to wander there for a minute and I have absolutely no clue why. Anybody?

The older Miss Nutcracker didn't have a gain, which might work better, but maybe...

I have definitely been back and forth on the Himelstrutz since they came out. I know you use them. Do you have this on?

I like the Under/Over the best. I find it amazing, but maybe too much of a boost for what you are after. But really it seems from what you described it would have to start before the pedals even and would come from the pups.

Pickups are another story. What I initially envisioned I don't think is out there. I have read the Klon for example makes the notes jump off of the board. I read the Himmel pedals can do the same. I was looking at the Under Over until Rob posted smut and I became distracted. Hey Honey you don't have a headache today do you?

Ok. I was looking at Himmelstrutz off and on for a good while now but he price tag steered me away. Sharkdiver reminded me of them again with the Under Over. I bought one and it is the best pedal I have ever laid my hands on. Actually it blows me away. It is simply amazing what it does.

What does it do man? Never heard of it,

There's only a coule pedals that I can think of that may do what your after, I'm not an expert by any means but I think it may be worth checking out:

- zvex philosophers tone
- bogner ecstasy blue pedal (new demo on YouTube)
- voodoo labs giggity

The zvex does the compression thing well although not the separation, the bogner blue can give you that separation through its character switch and the giggity well covers much ground different to an eq. Perhaps a combination instead of just one!

It is extremely transparent. It doesn't overload the input like other boosters I have heard. Keeps all tone in tact yet it some how enhances the tone and adds feel to the amp not that the amp isn't good. It is. I can turn the gains down some like an OD. Can't really explain it. Its excellent.

Way cool man. Sometimes the best things in life are also the hardest things to explain. I get ya.
