had my first band practice with the Chupa last night(thx Chris O).

sounded great, cut thru the mix of bass and another guitarist playing a Johnson head thru fender cab.

my problem is i need the leads to jump out over everything.a cpl DBs thats all.i heard my self a lil being 4 ft in front of rear loaded 4x12 on floor.

just need a lil volume boost.not so much a mid or any type of eq boost.(that i know of at this point.)

will a plain volume pedal suffice?
or would a boost pedal(have my eye on a koko boost) with lil gain and just the level bumped up be a better option?

music played is 70s80s90s2000s ROCK N ROLL!!!!!!!!
(skynyrd,metallica,zep,aerosmith,seether)

thx

I use to build a box that was like a preset vol pedal that incorporated a relay and a 25K pot, IN/OUT and FS or switching jack(I have them in my racks). Cables went from the FX loop on the amp to the box. Basically your rhythm vol was preset by the pot, then when it got switched out it was full ON. Not a solo boost but a rhythm cut. Psionic Audio made a box called the Lumos which is the same thing.

Brad and I will be doing a rack business out of LA soon, perhaps we will make some off these magic boxes.

ok,ill keep my ears/eyes open.thx Mark.

i really dont need anything til spring.my Cameron will be here by then, and ill be running 2 heads/2 cabs,so i may just be able to use one head for rhythm the other for leads.

options are open.

ill look into that too.thx.

While this will make it louder, it will color your tone. You may or may not like it. I used this method with a Fulltone Fat Boost for a while. It definately made it louder, but seemed to lower the gain and boost some unwanted treble. For me, my lead sound should do the opposite - more gain, less ice pick. I didn't like it.

There is an EQ pedal that Paul Gilbert uses that features a level control that will actually reduce the volume. He uses (used) it in front of his dirty amp to cut the input and get his clean tone. You could do the same in your FX loop, and you would still have bass, mid, and treble controls on the pedal to get you where you want to be rhythm wise.

I had my amp tech add a second, footswitchable master w/level control to my Marshall. To me, that is the best option. No change in tone, just louder.

hmmm,makes sense.

do not want to color my tone.the Chupa just plain sounds great.

what if i used the SUHR RIOT as a volume boost?
very little gain and raise up the volume.then step on it when i solo.

+1 on the MXR Line Boost.

I use consistently almost like a Tube Screamer in front of my amp at all times. (I have a 3 channel amp for a solo boost)... For me it drives it clearer with adding color to my tone vs a TS. Though it's meant for a solo boost. I just run it differently haha. Still love it.

I have had this problem in the past and found a few solutions. First off, Usually even the best boosters and o.d's will just end up adding more gain to your tone instead of an actual jump in speaker volume especially when ran out front, I have tried them all. If your amp has an fx loop you can get a volume box pedal which is just a stompbox with a volume knob that u set a bit lower for rhythm and leave the box on for rhythm and then when u switch the pedal off for leads the volume jumps back up, so basically its like a footswitchable power brake. I know electro harmonix makes one now and a few others do also. Also, The Ultimate attenuator or Ho attenuator can be ordered with footswitchable two volume levels so u can switch between the two levels while playing for lead boosts etc. I Own a Ho atten with this feature and it works great and I wonder why no other attenuator builder has this feature? ANother option is that You can have the amp easily modded for two footswitchable master volumes and that usually costs around $200. I had David bray mod a plexi for me with this feature and its priceless for leads when gigging especially in a twin guitar band. I couldnt do without it now that I am used to it.

Check out Sound Sculpture's Volcano if you are going to use something in the loop. It is MIDI programable for many different volumes, plus you can use an expression pedal as a volume pedal. Very cool product and it is about the size of a regular pedal. Basically the possibilities are endless - Boost, reduce, swells, mute, etc...

If the Chupa has a loop, pop an EQ pedal in there. Works great for a volume boost.

There is zero need to implement something that cuts your rhythm volume and then opens it back up for solos.

The Carl Martin Hydra Boost is the most transparent boost I have ever used or heard. All it does is add volume which is exactly what you need. No tone coloration at all. Stick it in the loop and you are done. Simple easy solution. :2thumbsup:

I do find citting rhythm volume a lil backwards.i just wanna strp on a pedal and add a cpl decibels of volume to make my leads stand out above the band.

Have been using an EQ pedal (in loop if amp has one) for years. Best solution I have had. Just bought an Amptweaker Tight Boost. It is under my Xmas tree. Cant wait to try it out.
