If you're looking for a different vibe but want to retain the QUALITY of tone, there are not many amps out there to choose from after the SLO. The first thing comes to mind is Diezel. However, they're not anywhere close to British tones you're looking for. If you're after that, I would strongly suggest Dave Friedman's work. He turns Marshalls into beasts and they sound gorgeous. However, they're still a Marshall, so you might experience a less "pure" tone than the SLO.

Most other amps will be a downgrade (I can't vouch for the Rhodes or a Cameron, as those are the only brands I have not yet heard).

Cornford capable of metal? I'd love to see that. Those amps are mostly for fluidish solos.. couldn't get a massive chugging rhythm sound out of any I owned.

Why not get bored of a SLO? Hell, there's at least 3 guys bored with their "best I've ever heard" Cameron's in the classifieds

And that causes you butt-hurt, why?

Why not get an MTS Rig? I use moded preamps.
http://salvationmods.com/index.php?page=modifications
http://www.jadedfaithmods.com/

My preamps include clones of-
Soldano SLO
Peavey 5150
Matchless DC30
Voc AC30
Orange Rockerverb
Orange AD30
Marshall 1959 Randy Rhoads Super Lead Plexi
Custom Audio 3+
Custom Audio OD100 SE+
Bogner Shiva
Bogner Extasy
Dumble Overdrive Special
Mesa Recto
Mesa Mark V
Fryette Pitbull
Custom 3EB module (half Vox AC30 & Half Mesa Heartbreaker)
Fender Blackface
Fender Bassman
Marshall Super Lead
Cameron CCV

If I get tried of a module, I can swap it out for another one. Besides the power amp, the preamps are more or less clones of the original circuits. So If you get tired of your SLO, why not try a Cameron and a 5150 and a Custom Audio and a Matchless module? then when you tire of that setup, you can chose a new one.

Ok...yes people, it's possible to become bored with great gear, even such legendary gear as the SLO. :poke: I'm amused by all the Soldano loyalism and people saying the OP is "doing it wrong"   The SLO is a great amp, of course, but if it was the end-all then we'd all just buy one and there would be no need to discuss anything here anymore, right? Just my observation-it seems many here have an amazing selection of guitars and amps (way nicer than what I have) and they still become bored, because:

A-they are not playing in a band or writing songs and getting anything out creatively. Wanking in the bedroom can lead to searching for new gear to compensate (not judging, as I've been there many times myself, only to find that when I play out live, I'm much more focused on the show and not my tone)

B-Playing live with the same gear for years can get stale, and maybe dude just wants to try something new

Anyway, check out the Friedman stuff, Baron B series, 5150 III, maybe an Engl Retro?

This is gonna sound really strange ,,as its only a 30 watt amp .BUT if you are looking for an AC30 vox and A britsh high gain in a head check out the Fryettte Memphis. If you want more punch the SiGX.

Truthfully the Memphis i though was a country amp ,lol ummm nope .it has 3 gain stages and puts in a fourth for boost its a really aggressive lil class A 30 watt, its el84 drive channel do an amazing job of replicating the el34 .I would say it stops just shy of death metal ..

BTW I have a Baron B60 for $1100 in classifieds if you are interested in those as well

I can see u being bored of the SLO. Great amp no doubt; I miss having a Soldano. I had an SLO, as well as the SLOvenger (who ever has it now PM me when you're ready to sell it back; don't forget I've got buyback dibs  )

Sounds to me like you just miss the old Marshall tone. Classic as it is  I would keep the Soldano and just pick up an old Marshall like a JMP or 800; couple boosts and you should be fine.

That Fryettte Memphis sounds sweet!

I think thee doth protest too much

I've gone from a SLO to a Friedman Marsha FWIW. Couldn't be happier.

Suhr PT-100 FTW Bay-bee!!

That would have him missing the SLO real quick. I had a PT-100 for a year next to my SLO. Still got the SLO

Totally agree. Some guys just don't find a magic piece of gear that satisfies them for the rest of their lives. I've had some great amps (XTC, Shiva, Triamp, Pittbull, etc) and eventually got bored with them, or they weren't as usefull to me as they were when I first owned them. Big deal! I still think they were great amps... but I've learned enough about myself to know that to one degree or another, the grass will always appear greener on the other side of the fence when given enough time. So I sell the gear that I've gotten bored with and acquire something that lights my fire for a while. Digging the Powerball II and DSL50 that currently inhabit the man cave. But who knows what will be there a year from now? Who really cares? The only thing that I regret about trying different amps is all the PIA shipping hassles that being a gear whore involves...
