Episode #24: Boss BF-2 Flanger
Way back during Episode 16, I demoed the Boss HF-2. That was my very first Boss Flanger pedal. As far as flangers go, that's one of my favorites. It's very musical and can be nice and subtle if you want it. The BF-2 is actually quite similar, though it sounds a bit more 'colored' if that makes sense. A little less natural.
The BF-2 is a very old design. It came out in 1980 to replace the BF-1. Up until it was discontinued in 2001, it underwent very few circuit changes. Really, the only notable change was an op-amp swap. So, you can probably get away with snagging any version. Although, the Boss snobs will most likely always opt for the 'made in Japan' version.
Really, there isn't a whole lot else to say. It's a very popular flanger and it sounds good. I like to keep the Rate and Depth controls at around noon, while setting the Manual at 3:00 and the Res at 9:00. This yields a pleasant, almost chorus like flange. Very nice! Flange is not something that's going to end up on my pedal board anytime soon. I'm a phase/ vibe guy, but flange has its place. Pick one of these babies up for cheap!
