Episode #53: DSD-2/ DSD-3 Digital Sampler Delay
The Boss DSD-2 and DSD-3 pedals have the distinction of being some of the rarest Boss pedals out there, but you don't seem to hear much about them. Much like the DD-2 and early DD-3, there is no difference between the DSD-2 and DSD-3. Boss decided to lower the price on the DSD-2 (as a result of cheaper production costs for them), and felt that renaming the pedal for a lower price point was better than dropping the price on the DSD-2.
One of the coolest aspects of the DSD-2 and 3, is that they share the 'long chip' present in the much sought after and more expensive DD-2. They are excellent substitutes for that pedal, and can be had for a bit cheaper.
Tonewise, the DSD-2/ 3 is awesome. Like I mentioned before, it basically a DD-2 with a early sampler function. You can read my review on the DD-2 for more elaboration on the tones. Just know that it's probably the best sounding Boss digital delay.
The sampler function is pretty interesting. Unfortunately, it's pretty complex and definitely not intuitive; not something you'd ever use live. There is also a 'Trigger In' jack for use with old sample recorders. Not something one would even bother with this day in age.
So, if you are in the market for a DD-2 and want to save a few bucks, give the DSD-2/ 3 a try. It's my delay pedal of choice!
