Episode 57: Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb/ Delay
Out of all of the Boss Reverb pedals, the RV-3 just might be the most popular, and for good reason. It's important to note, that the RV-3 has modes with Reverb AND Delay at the same time, something that isn't present in the RV-2 or RV-5. This may be why the pedal is favored by bands needing ambient tones.
The RV-3 has 11 modes: 3 strictly Delay, 4 Delay and Reverb, and 4 strictly Reverb. The Delay modes are comprised of short, medium, and long delay times. The Reverb modes consist of Room 1 (short), Room 2 (medium), Hall, and Plate.
The 4 Delay and Reverb Modes are by far the main attraction of the pedal. There are some beautiful lush tones in these 4 modes. To be honest, this pedal could consist of these 4 modes, and I'd be just fine.
The delay only modes are good, but nothing amazing. I didn't feel especially inspired playing them. The reverb only modes however are great. Nice and natural; amazing from a compact pedal!
One thing I really enjoy, is cranking op the reverb in the mix knob. That way, you have zero attack, leaving only the reverb tails. And speaking of tails, this pedal has em! You can turn the pedal off and the reverb tail trails off.
Overall, I recommend any ambient junky to check out the RV-3. It's a classic and a benchmark for similar pedals.
