Video's will be coming twice a week! I'll be posting new demos on Sunday, and again on Wednesday.

Here is the latest!

Episode 6: Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

How does the Boss SD-1 stack up now that there are about a million different overdrive pedals available? Quite well! The SD-1 has a similar design as compared to the Ibanez Tube Screamer. The biggest difference is that the Boss has asymmetrical clipping, while the TS has symmetrical clipping. What does that mean? It means the SD-1 will have a bit more volume, harmonic content, and crunch, which the TS will have more edge and drive. (taken from Analogman.com)

In my opinion, there are some OD's that work best in front of a clean amp, and others that work best in front of a dirty amp. In my experience, Boss OD pedals tend to work best in front of dirty amps. If you do run it in front of a clean amp, be prepared to crank that level control in order to have unity gain. Otherwise, the pedal will be softer than your clean amp by itself!

So pick one of these up and put it in front of your Marshall JMP or JCM800!

Pretty accurate overview. Definitely liked that you did the pedal justice by showing it in front of an over-driven amp. Too many reviews with it only on the clean channel. I've used the SD-1 for 7-8 years with my valve king, pushing the dirty channel. At 3:00, you say the drive knob goes to 6 o'clock? Bit thrown off by that.

I've agreed with this review since 1982. And I still dig the Boss SD-1 in front of a crunchy Marshall.

Big fan of the SD-1 in front of my JCM 800 and Triple Rectifier, great pedal imo nice review.

I still have no idea WTF that all means. What are the definitive differences between crunch and drive? What is the relationship between harmonic content and edge, blah, blah, blah? I do understand more volume though ;)

On a positive note, I love the project you have going on and the demos. What is your current roster of pedals?

I have around 35 or 36 Boss pedals in the stable as of now. I'll have to write them out.

I'll still redo the DS-1. Its not next, but not far off :).

Cool demo.
Great playing btw.

I liked the 2 settings before the last one.
The last one got a bit hairy and lost some articulation.
I'm not considering trying one of these pedals.
I have a Metal Core that I bought on a whim.
It's a bit over the top at times, but it's fun to play. :) I keep the distortion level at 9am or below and it's pretty cool for what it does.
