Episode 35: XT-2 Xtortion

No pedal in my mind represents the silliness of marketing in the mid 90's like the Boss XT-2 Xtortion. Everything was 'extreme this, extreme that'. I remember thumbing through a Boss product catalog and wondering what the Xtortion sounded like. It must be pretty Xtreme! Last weeked, I walked into my local music store to find a cheap mike stand. I walked out with the stand, and the Xtortion! At this point, I rarely find any Boss pedal I need out in the wild. Of course, I had to buy it. I mean come on, it has the paint job of a dang Ferrari!

The Xtortion was marketed as an extreme distortion pedal. It has a metallic edge to it that you either like or hate. I fall more in the latter category, but you can make this pedal sound useable. According to Bossarea.com, the pedal was only produced for around 11 months and less 20,000 pedals were made. That's not many for a Boss pedal, believe me.

My biggest beef with the Xtortion, it that it sounds too harsh. It works as a purposefully 'bad' sounding distortion unless you really fiddle with the controls. I find that if you keep both the Color and Punch knobs below 12:00, the pedal sort of sounds good actually. Anything at 12:00 or beyond, and it's nastyville. But, that might be exactly what you want. When you crank the punch knob, you can achieve a 'cocked wah' tone, which is kinda cool.

I prefer the pedal in front of a dirty amp, and with the Punch and Distortion controls at 9:00. You can either leave the Color knob at 12:00 or turn it down as well.

Ok, so what is the Xtortion? It's a very harsh, almost fuzzy distortion pedal. It definitely doesn't go against your expectations. Do I like it? Well, it's interesting, but it isn't something that I'd keep if I weren't crazy and collecting all of these Boss pedals.
