This is my second go around with one, and still have the same outcome. Underwhelmed.

I played it through a couple clean amps, and my Triple XXX clean channel. Probably not the best of cleans, but the others were better, (Mesa Nomad clean, and a 2205). All three, it sounded like ass. Brittle, or muddy, or some cases both, (if that makes sense). Couldn't seem to find a happy-medium. I even dialed the gain trim-pot to zero, then to 9:00. It *almost* wants to work as a boost, (though I know it's not it's strong point, or intended purpose). If I set the volume at about 1:00 o'clock, gain at about 7:00, (barely cracked, and gain trimpot dialed all the way down), it sounds pretty mean and nasty boosting the crunch channel of my Triple XXX, but, it's muddy/woofy, or harsh/shrill with slight adjustments to bass/tight.

I'm going to try it with my brother's '79 JMP 2x12 combo today. If it rips, I'll look at maybe getting a Marshall Origin. Or, you'll see it in the classifieds soon.

Next experiment after the JMP will be in an FX return, (though that would screw up my whole effects chain, unless I integrate it with my RP1000). Maybe I can dial in a good clean patch with the RP and hit the front end, or the RP's loop, and run it post, like a preamp?

What's the key here to dialing it in? Where do many of you start with the dials? I pretty much went from noon, (except the gain).

I’m waiting for that new double pedal DP-OD that Dave has coming out sometime next month. The mid control and the 2 channels are what I was looking for and that new pedal has both.

You don't need a silly pedal, you need my D60 with factory installed effects loop ;)

Don’t know if any of the amps listed are great pedal platforms

I think that's the biggest issue. It's not that they're bad amps, just not designed to be pedal platforms. My Dirty Shirley and BE-OD pedals sound great through something like a Bassman. I find that I greatly prefer putting dirt boxes in front of an amp that either has the bright switch that I can turn off, or doesn't have a bright cap at all.

I've had the BE-OD twice myself and both times thought it was great, just not needed or redundant. I agree on the type of amp platform making a difference. I used it with an old Teisco 50 watt tube head, a Sound City 50 watt tube pa and the clean channel of a PRS Archon. Sounded great through all of them. The Archons clean channel is great for pedals. I generally had the internal trim pot just below noon and usually ran the gain knob between 9 and 10 O'clock and IF I needed more I would just boost it. Depending on my guitar, I ran the tight knob just below noon or just past noon.

here's a video of my old board. I have two BE-OD's on it. One is set for a bit higher gain.

If you are looking for something with the JMP- to bypass the preamp- the VH4 pedal sounds pretty good. The guy from the darkness is using one through the effects loop of a plexi reissue live these days

I agree that the base clean tone will make or break the final tone with it. Definitely no bright cap as mentioned and the mids need to be in right place. Thru my Mesa Mark IV with bright not pulled it sounded great. The clean tone needs to be kind of bland and a little dull on top ime.

This.

I have one and it absolutely kills through the clean channel of my Armageddon. It's also pretty great in front of an ISP pedalboard power amp into a 4x12.

I have one and I think it sounds great. I use it with my Marshall Super Lead.

I have one, i run it into my Jcm800 not into a clean amp, and it works awesome for me.
