Call me crazy, but I bought another r9. They are both 2004 in washed cherry. I actually bought the second one to compare pickups and setups. Then after a couple weeks of playing, I will choose one and sell the other. Anybody else ever done this?

Bought two identical R9s, compared them extensively with weights and measures then sold the one they liked the least?

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say most likely no...

That said... pics? Would love to know the end result and if there's a night/day difference between the two.

I'll post pics when the other arrives in a couple days. The new one also has WCR Darkburst pups, 50's NOS caps, 550k pots, and some other upgrades. My current is dead stock. It will be an interesting comparison, and probably a tough dilemna at the end.

I did that long ago with Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitars. In the mid 1990's you could find them used for around $350.

The first one I had was white with dot inlays and an aftermarket badass 2 bridge. I later got a jetglo with the stock bridge and triangle inlays. The jetglo had a lot more wear but I prefered it because it had a lot more output and growl. It sounded more aggressive. I sold the white and kept the jetglo one.

The WCR pickups (in my opinion only) are going to sound way better than stock Gibson pickups.

I've never gelled with any of Gibson's 490/498/500/Burstbucker etc. all day long pickups. In my Les Paul I have a Sheptone in the neck and a WCR Godwood in the bridge: it's a match made in heaven.

I have some Sheptone Tributes on order. They will be tested also.

Nice!

I got a free Blue Sky pickup after doing a rewire for a customer of mine.

I've been looking at Throbak and Motor City Pickups as well.

I've never done it but can definitely see the logic, good idea really. Especially considering how inconsistent those LPs tend to be.

If one sounds better to you try the pickups from the good one in the other and see/hear if that's all it was.

I'm going to probably put the best pickups in the one I like better and sell or trade the other. Actually I'll probably put all the best parts on the one I like better and return the other to stock.

Not with R9's (because I've never owned one) but, I've owned two of the same model guitar at the simultaneously 4 times (and one other time I had THREE of the same model) all in the name of picking the one that speaks to me the most.

With those pickup differences, I'd really make my critical listening in a quiet room and play unplugged.

Update-Been playing both for 2 weeks now. They are slightly different sounding acoustically but both very nice guitars. It is a very hard decision! I may just keep both!

Which one do you like better based on looks?

Beatiful guitars!! I like the first one more but that may be a function
Of the closeness to the finish. Aside from the neck profile, do
You know what is the main difference between r8 and r9s?
Is it night and day?

Neck size is the main difference between an R8 and R9. The R8 has a thicker neck profile.

both look nice but i like the 2nd one the best, but looks arent whats important, how do they sound.
i love my R9, one of my favorite guitars.
