Ever the EVH fan boy, I bought a veriac today for my Ceriatone Yeti 50 & I must say, EVERYONE needs a Veriac to make their tone more 'brown'.

Best $86 I ever spent.

This clip is direct in, no effects with the Veriac set to 90 volts.

Awesome clip man, but I'm sure some of the tone is in the hands. Thanks for sharing!

No i don't need a variac but thanks for sharing.

Turn up the amp i can't hear it very well.

Did you re-bias after lowering the line voltage ?

instead of a variac, install power scaling to lower B+ but NOT the heater voltages. You is gonna kill those tubes.

Huge discussion of this over at the Metro forum with regards to lowering everything via a variac or just lowering b+. Most have had fine results with the variac, but I'll have to bow to your knowledge.

$40 in tubes for some fun=worth it to me! Nice

You gotta be f'n kidding... Metro forum is deader than a bug-bombed pile of roaches. I think only one survived and he's talking to himself...

What exactly is this?

Will it give the exact same tone & feel as a veriac?

Seriously? Have you been there lately?

And yes, there was a lengthy 3 page discussion on the whole variac thing back in March.

The Variac lowers the voltage. That EXTENDS tube life, no?

That's the spirit! Just don't put your best NOS tubes in there unless you are prepared for them to sound crappy after a while...

exact? probably not. But both methods reduce voltage. The variac reduces all voltages (high voltage B+ to power tubes, preamp tubes, 6.3Vac heaters, negative bias voltage, power for channel switching, etc.). With power scaling, you only affect B+, and you can limit it to just the power tubes if you want. That way, the tubes still get the right heater voltage, etc.

heater voltages should be +/-10% of the nominal voltage (6.3Vac or 12.6Vac, depending on wiring). Going higher or lower is bad for different reasons. Running them with lower voltages (some folks say lower than 5%, or 6V) supposedly causes 'cathode poisoning', which makes the tubes sound crappy. They don't die catastrophically (like they will with higher-than-nominal voltages), but they won't sound good for long.

lowering the heater voltages might also increase the heater current. Since the power transformer has a limited heater current capacity, you should probably know what that capacity is and make sure that the 'stock' amp isn't already near capacity. In that case, I imagine that the variac could cause problems for the PT...

Yes I have - who's leg are you trying to pull? That place is a graveyard. Maybe five people post the same rehashed brown sound shit on a revolving 3 month basis in hopes of drumming up business / new suckers.

Looks like they changed hosts too... seems they keep having problems with DDoS's. And lost a few more members after the domain change.

I think there's one guy left there and he's the pivot man to his own circle jerk.

That forum kinda died off after the domain issues, but it's beginning to pick up a little.

It's too bad as George is a genius & his new MetroPlex amp is killer.
