Splitting hairs here...they both sound great. If I were to nitpick, I would say that the brownbucker was a little tighter and punchier and the super distortion was a little hairier, but those differences could potentially have more to do with the guitars overall than the pickups specifically. You've got your "EVH" tone and feel dialed in...I wouldn't be surprised if you could nail it better with a stock Strat single coil than most players could playing the original Frankenstein.

you're correct rupe - the comparison should really be done in the same guitar!

it is interesting that between the two guitars the ash body is tight and a bit mid scooped compared to the Charvel which has more mids and softness to its sound.
When i listen to the clips i hear it the other way around using the given pickups in each guitar.

first listen is on my laptop with tiny speakers, but i would say the first one sounded a little too raw for me. the second clip was more refined sounding...smoother maybe. i would take the second one based on what i heard on these small speakers.

i agree the BB is a little more jaggedy around the edges. the super D has more compression/mids/smoother.

i listened again from my pc with Altec speakers with subwoofer and i still stand by my first thoughts. i just don't like the Brownbucker at all. that tone reminds me of the time i took some of those pickups out of a Sterling EVH cheapo guitar and put them in an Ibanez rgt42 neck thru mahogany guitar. it had that EVH tone, but was a little unrefined and jagged sounding. my vote is stay with the super distortion pickups.

great playing by the way.

IMHO:

The Charvel is to polite sounding. Very compressed and it's almost like the attack comes after you hit a note.

I actually get a bit of that with a duncan 59 in some of my guitars.

The ash strat has the snap and even though it has some of that Compression, it still has the a quicker attack IMHO.

at least That's what I'm hearing.

They both sound really nice. The SD seems to have a squish/sag that I prefer

Thanks!

to me ALL paf's have.... thsi sound. always too scooped for what i want to hear. There is clankiness i do like about the pickup but i still prefer the SD.

good ears my friend.
the alder lends itself to that more "polite sound" even the neck is softer sounding than the rosewood on my ash strat. (i always thought it was the other way around with maple versus rosewood but not from what i have found.)
yeah the 59 again is a paf and has that jagged scooped mids that i don't prefer in any pickup i try that is a paf in its makeup.

What happened to the Motor City?

took the blackbelt out to try the Brownbucker.

i do have a second degree blackbelt i will try in the charvel as well.

something i have never tried is the Detroiter in any of my VH guitars. - love it in my les paul.

if sounding like eVH is your thing then I' say the Brownbucker was the Better of the 2 clips for that sound

A nod to the brownbucker. To my ears I can hear more nuances in the pick attack. The high really comes out clear. Thank you for the clips.

We are not only hearing two different body woods, we are hearing one body with paint and a Floyd Rose and one without paint and with a steel, vintage style Fender bridge. It's not so much a pickup comparison test as it is a complete guitar tone comparison test.

you are correct - i will stick the Brown Bucker in my ash guitar and make clips again.

ill have to do it at a later date since the amp i used is packed and ready to ship - stay tuned. ;)

Actually I had it reversed...I listened to the SD clip first and then commented as if it were the first clip. They're still very close though.

Mark did you ever do an A/B with a Duncan Distortion versus the Super Distortion?

I prefer the SD/ash combo for sure.

You've got that Eddie stuff nailed bro!!

I'm assuming you dial in the reverb/delay in your DAW. What settings do you use and which plugin ??
