Budget studio monitors?

I'm in the market for a pair of cheap monitors. I'll be using them to mix and master recordings at home, as well as my regular guitar playing/practice. I use Positive Grid Bias for all of my amp sounds now, so a nice set of monitors would really help for my day to day playing.

Who's making the best monitors on the cheap these days?

You're looking at $300 for 5" and $500 for 8". 5" is enough for a small room at low volume but the bass response is a little less.

You should take advantage of the 4th of July sales and go down to your local big box music store and listen for a while and see which ones you gel with best. In addition to the MAudio I would add Yamaha and JBL to the list. The two sets that I have both were half price during holiday sales.

Those JBL's seem pretty nice for the money these days, when they are sale they seem a really good deal

Samson RESOLV A6 Active Studio Reference Monitors are surprisingly good.
Tighter lows and clearer mids than the 8". Next step up are the Yamaha HS8s.

I've owned KRK Rokits, MAudio BX5s, Behringer B2031As, Yamaha HS8s, and now use Mackie HR824s and HR624s. Although they didn't sound as good as the Mackies the Behringer Truth B2031A monitors sounded great at a fraction of the price. You can get them used for around $250/pair.

I've got the JBL LSR305.. lots of volume and bandwidth from those. They are a real hit over here... I decided that the foot print of the 308 was a little to much for my desk.

So many suggestions! Very cool.

How about a cheap pair of monitor headphones? I do a lot of silent jamming at home. A nice set of headphones would really help out.

I would also recommend better/higher end headphones rather than cheap monitors

Regardless of what people say, I really like my KRK Rockit 6s. People have started hating on them ever since the influx of bedroom dubstep and EDM producers have started using them but there is probably a reason for their popularity. They work great for me!
