Bought an SG off ebay... guy lives 2 hrs away and agreed to let me pick it up. What is the best process? Do I pay via paypal like normal and then just pick it up? What if there's an issue with the guitar?

I'd just pay cash or cashiers check, look the guitar over if he don't mind but Ebay works off feedback so once you win the auction you've agreed to purchase it regardless, if hes smart he wont accept paypal since the item would need to be shipped to confirm its been delivered from what I understand.

I have done couple of sales where we show up, my buyer looks at the item to make sure it's cool, then sends me PayPal gift from one of our phones.

You could pay for it with Paypal as usual. You have the same buyer protection as if it was shipped to you.

As a seller I'm leery of this unless it's a cash deal. If the buyer was to use Paypal and open a dispute there is no proof of delivery.Buyer could say it was never delivered. Seller would need to provide tracking, and since it was picked up in person, sellers word against the buyer, buyer usually wins.
I had this almost happen once. Guy wanted to drive 2 hours to meet me to pick up a small item ($750) but cheap to ship. It seemed like a hassle and I didn't want him coming to my house and possibly try to haggle so I refused. Two weeks later he opens a dispute saying not as described, was brand new in box and he knew exactly what it was. I ended up winning after a credit card chargeback but the guy was a schmuck and I can imagine if he picked up in person I would have been screwed out of my $750.
But since your the buyer, ignore all that!

That's why he should use Gift pay when they meet. No recourse with Gift.

I'd want cash, then there isn't any non-delivery issues and you'd save some money not using PP.

Just pay regular PayPal and leave good feedback when you receive

Basically it goes like this:
If the seller doesn't "list" local pickup as an shipping option when they make the auction page, they shouldn't allow local pickup (not just writing it in the description, I mean). Ebay/Paypal technically requires proof of shipping if that is how the page was set. Otherwise it opens the seller up to a "not received" case potentially.

In your case, I would take the cash out from the bank, and go to get it. You could pay with Paypal, but that would be redundant, and the seller would lose on fees (3%). You could try to bargain to a lower price before hand if you do the pickup, if you and the seller both agree to cancel the sale on Ebay, (thus they would't have to pay the Final Value Fee from their pocket, but that is a moral decision (since they used Ebay's services).

There have been lot's of folks who have abused the rules from Ebay over the last 15 years, and this is why they made it so much tighter. There were several cases back in the day because of the looseness of the return policy. I used to send Post Office Money Orders, to pay for items, about a decade ago, lol. Never got burnt, but there was literally nothing I could do if the person didn't mail the item, short of going to the house address I mailed it to...

Last time I checked, this was not true.

To get "Buyer Protection" you would have to show that you got the guitar, and was unhappy with it for some reason. Ebay/Paypal will ask for a tracking number for it from the seller. Ironically, you could say you never got it since the seller never "mailed" it to you, but that is deceptive...and would negate any case you try to open, since you technically never "received" the item.

Also, if you open a case, and they side with you (the buyer), you would have to mail it back to them with tracking/signature etc...

Just keep it simple dude. If you are getting it shipped, pay by Paypal (Both Ebay and PP are much better these days on disputes; took them long enough though...). If it is local feasible, do the cash, but be careful to check it out to your 100% satisfaction, before going your separate ways.

Good luck to ye'
