I'm new to this forum, and figured I'd ask for some advice on a speaker and cab choice for my new Egnater Tweaker 15 head.

I play rock/metal/hardcore, and just got a tweaker head for recording/practicing at home. The problem is that I can't decide on a 1x12 cab. I prefer closed-back cabs, so I decided not to get the matching tweaker 112 cab. I'm trying to decide between a contemporary Avatar 1x12 (closed-back loaded with a Hellatone 30) or the Basson sound 112 cab (also closed-back loaded with a 75watt eminence legend) The hellatone 30 with the avatar cab is basically a celestion 70th anniversary heritage30 that has been already broken in. I like the reviews I've read about both cabs, the basson is sealed so supposedly it has really tight, punchy low-end, (which sounds like I would like that) but would it be better to get the avatar cab loaded with a lower-wattage speaker since the tweaker is only 15 watts? ( I realize the celestion/hellatone speaker will be more efficient since it's only 30watts, but will I get clearer tone with the 75watt eminence instead?

Sorry for the long post, I'm trying to decide which cab would be better for high-gain stuff...

My buddy has an Avatar contemporary 112, his is loaded with a WGS veteran 30. I thought the cab was built pretty well and sounded good, though I preferred the sound of my homebrew 112's. The Avatar didn't have as much low end as my copy of the mesa recto 112 with a vintage 30 had.

As far as speakers, the Hellatone 30 is a nice speaker, but I am not sure it is the best choice if you are doing alot of metal, though neither is a 112. With Avatar you can load whatever celestion you like, so I think a V30 or CL80 might be a better choice.

I don't know enough about basson amps or cabs to make a recommendation.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to be using the 1x12 for recording demos and home use only, so that's why I'm going with a 1x12. I'm not so fond of vintage 30's, that's why I'm looking at other speakers. When I bought my tweaker I tried the egnater cab loaded with a celestion heritage30, I thought it sounded good, but maybe a bit too muffled and "woofy" in the low-end for my taste (not sure if that was mostly from the speaker, or the cab being a partially-open-back cab) I also tried the tweaker through a jet-city 1x12 loaded with a custom eminence 70-watt speaker, and I thought the tone was a lot more tight in the low-end, and definitely more clear than the heritage30 in the egnater cab, I just can't figure out if it was the eminence speaker with the higher wattage, or if it was because the jet city was a closed back cab...

I choose the avatar solely because its not made of MDF like the basson.

cool. thanks for the advice man, that bass cab looks crazy, wonder how it would sound for guitar?...

I have an Avatar 2x12 that's a really solid cab. So based on build quality I'd go Avatar, and maybe a gk100 if you don't like the V30.

What's the Gk100 like? will the 100watt speaker be too much for the tweaker to push?

I don't think the amp should have any issues with that speaker, you just won't get much speaker break up like you would from a green back. The GK100 is often recommended by the Avatar guys if you're going to play hard rock and metal. It has a really goo frequency response, it doesn't color your tone too much. Your amp pretty much gives all the gain and tone.

awesome! Thanks man, I think I'm gonna go with the avatar loaded with the gk100, that way I can use my marshall lead 100 on it as well. thanks for the advice!

sooooo.... I was JUST about to order the contemporary 1x12 from avatar when I came across a brand new mesa boogie roadster 2x12 for $300! ($259+35shipping for the avatar, or $300 for a brand new mesa boogie roadster 2x12, you do the math on that one...) so I drove up after work yesterday and picked it up, and MAN OH MAN!!! The Tweaker sounds effin awesome through it! I also pulled my old marshall lead 100 out of the closet to try through the mesa 2x12, and it absolutely RIPS!! This 2x12 is small, but has an insane amount of awesome low-end, (It sounds WAAAY better than my splawn 4x12) and it's TIGHT as hell too!

Nice! I like those cabs. I'm looking into getting an Avatar 1x12, but I'd certainly dig having that Roadster cab too!

What's it loaded with?

wow, nice score!

Nice pickup on the Mesa 212, Mesa in general makes really nice cabs. I am also curious what speakers are in it. I assume the back is closed on both sides....

Fully closed back with V30's I'm guessing.

yeah, it's fully closed backed with vintage 30's, I hated the vintage 30's in my Splawn 4x12(I swapped em out), but I'm really liking them in the mesa 2x12, this thing has the tight bottom end/low-mids that I've been looking for; I can't wait to record with this thing...
