ive been wanting to upgrade my main cabinet(s) now for a while. i use two 5150 cabinets slant/straight, but dont want to change speakers or sell either of them.

so im looking at a third or even possibly a fourth cabinet at this point, possibly loaded with MC90/Splawn big block combination in one and V30's in the other, or a mix of both in either.

Anyone have anything bad to say about the regular size Engl cabinets, and not the oversize ones? Anything i should know? Any good dealers? I know they are hard to come by on the used market.

Amplifiers are a modified marshall, 5150 II.

Other options as far as cabinets are concerned are the Splawn cabinets. I cant really decide and do not know if one would benefit another here? :dunno:

Any recommendations i am all ears, thank you ahead of time

i love my warhead cabs....tried almost everything but always come back........of course the head sucked

My Basson cab is the best sounding cab i have ever used.
I have two, the better sounding one has Eminence Patriots in it, the other has some other Eminence in it, but I'm not sure what they are.

Imho, the 5150II/6505+ really likes V30's. I recently picked up a Randall 4x12 w/V30's, and it's a great sounding, really well made cab.

Look at a V30 loaded Randall, or a Krank Rev cab with Legends. I have one and it kills with the 6505. I like my 6505 better through the Krank than my V30 Mesa.
The standard Engl cab is the V60 loaded one, which is not all plywood. There is some MDF in there if I remember correctly. I played one with a Fireball and it didn't sound terrible, but the V60 speakers were a little scooped and fizzy. Similar to T75. Any V30 Engl cab will be better in way of materials and speakers.

Let's finally put this one to rest for God's sake. The ENGL Pro cabinets, that is the regular sized ones with V30s in them, are not MDF at all. I have opened them up and looked.

Ok, now that that is done...the ENGL Pro cabs sound killer and are a great way to go if you are looking at front loaded cabs. I would also highly suggest Fryette Fatbottom cabs as they have the best low end response I have ever heard in a modern 412.

I've been looking for an Engl pro cab in the used market with no luck, then just by chance a Fryette/ VHT fat bottom cab showed up local on craigs list so I snapped it up, I've had it for two days now I'm pretty happy with it.

I'll give a detailed review once I clock some time with it

Yeah that's what I said. The Pro's are all ply and have V30's. The Standard cab with the cheap V60's is MDF body and only a birch ply baffle.

I did not know the Engl Pro's, not the Engl Pro XL's, were also front loaded? never knew that :)

Awsome, cant wait for the review. And yes i have loved every recording and video of an engl pro cabinet that i can find, but cannot for the life of me locate a new one to try or a used one to buy. I have considered other cabinets like splawn and hiwatt, ill start looking into VHT's. are VHT's ported front or rear or no? front or rear loaded? i have been looking at rear loaded cabinets so far, maybe i should reconsider and try a front loaded?

It is not ported and has front loaded speakers.
I definitely recommend you try one out

Probably Legend 1258s. I had a Basson 2x12 that was my first cabinet and I miss it to this day... I sold it stupidly along with my Splawn Quick Rod when I quit my last band, figuring the rig was too loud for most places... argh.

I agree with the ENGL Pro cab. Had one a few years back and think it was the best I have heard so far. The only cab that made my Powerball sound the way it was suppose too. Kick myself all the time for selling that rig.

You can't go wrong with the ENGL.

Engl Pro's are built like brick shit houses, and i have to agree they have their own attitude going on that just cant be replicated. I feel like if i try to go for something else and save money, in the long run i will still want to try the Engl Pro series anyway

Randall warhead cabs are great, and for the price, they are hard to beat. Front loaded, 120 Lbs and V30's :D Great low end, very tight.

Randall Warheads
Fryette Fatbottom's
Engl Pro
Splawn Cabinets

Splawn 2 for 2, Engl 3-3, Warheads 1-1 and Fryette's 2-2.

Cant wait on the Fryette Reviews. Does anyone know the ply count of Fryette?

+1 on the ENGL Pro Cab!!! It's a killer. I recently had this dilemma and scored a sweet deal on a Diezel 4x12... Pics will come soon I promise. Here was my list I was lookin at

ENGL Pro
Diezel
Splawn
Orange
Mesa Recto

IMHO you kind of have a conundrum, atleast as far as what speakers will be best your amps.

You're wanting to upgrade, and that's fine, but the speakers you're choosing aren't what i'd choose for both of your amps. Fine for the 5150, but i'd rather see you have some Webers, Scumbacks, or English Greenbacks with the Marshall.

Do you have other amps, besides your Sig, or other amps down the road?

Matching amps and cabs can be a pain!

You are very right, matching speakers/amps/cabs can be a pain. the sheffields have done their job great, but i feel like its time to move on and try something else, things get old and there are many more options out there nowdays.

speaker wise ive never really liked CL-80's, dislike the headroom stock EVH III cabinet speakers have, played some splawn small blocks which have a great attitude and headroom but a real steep high end rolloff, and would rather not have such a controlling speaker, really like what i hear with the MC90's in the mid's and the big-blocks seem like they would add that extra-ness to the mix.

i remember that splawn speaker recording collection that was posted here on rig-talk many months ago, and remember really liking what the big blocks added to the mix of the speakers they were paired with.

V-30's are self explanitory on their own.

BTW i should probably mention the marshall isnt really a marshall, it has as much if not more gain than a 5150, even beyond the engl area

its housing my 4 year long prototype circuit for a new series of amplifiers i plan to open once i graduate BSEE in 3-4 years. SS and tube hybrid.

Thanks ahead of time for all of the replies, definately alot of information to digest and look at and compare. Cant wait for the few followups
