For those that have played these amps, how would you say the CAE OD100 SE+ (w/el34s and plexi OT) it compares to the Diezel Herbert and Bogner Uberschall in terms of gain, saturation, compression, tightness, low end, thickness and shear brutality?

Have you played the 50 watt version? How does it compare to the 100w?

Talk about 3 totally different sounding amps.

If it's brutal you want, the Custom Audio OD100 in any of the various versions ain't gonna get you there.

Looks like you have an Ubershall... stick with that, IMO.

I think the CAE is very similar to the 101B. They can be dialed in to sound very close. Loose, deep, and vintagey. The Uber and Herbert can also be dialed pretty similar. More saturation, tightness, and modern.

The CAE does not have the low end of the Uber or Herbert, not even close.

Exactly... if brutal is the requirement, then Uber or Herbert will get you there. It's not to say the OD100 isn't a great sounding amp... it's just a different sound.

Maybe I am not remembering correctly, but I recall hearing a clip of the CAE and it was insane sounding. I think it was posted by Moshaholic. I think it was a GAS thread he started... Not sure. But it seemed to have puh-lenty of modern brutality.

Just sayin'

Dime the presence on the back and flip the womp all the way up and it is pretty brutal. I have 5881' and it sounds pretty mean. Obviously not like a Herbert as that is very compressed. I have never played an Uber, but that sounds almost compressed as a Herbert.

i have spent time with all 3 and they all 3 have similarities and differences, that being said i prefer herbert. i will say YOU need to play the amps with YOUR hands and guitars as those are the most important part of the equation. My hands combined with my preferred guitars (anderson drop tops) just got along with the herbert for the most all around versatility but keep in mind what works for one may not work for the other...

some of the clips on youtube sound pretty damn good to me. Unfortunately, mine is a situation of "buy it to try it." Just wondering if I really need to spend another $3k (well I don't need to, I just may want to  ) or if should be happy with what I already have - since the CAE won't really add much.

There is only one answer here

VH4

:D

We'll both have the same amps if I do that - so much for being original.

I'd have to sell my VHT though and that doesn't arrive until tomorrow.

You have an Uber, Ecstacy, Herbert and, soon, a Deliverance... I don't think you'll need an OD100.

Yea, man, honestly Uber, Herbert, XTC is already a lot to take. VH4 is an extreme icing on top. I love the Deliverance, but I won't buy it having these 4. Obviously you could buy many amps & each will have something special, but I doubt you'll be turning them on more often than once in a few months. Out of all my amps the 2 that get regular use are Herbert & VH4. I rarely even turn on my Bogners.

It's not a question of need I guess. Really, more of a want.

I'm just a hobbiest/bedroom player so I already don't "need" what I have.

I go through phases with my amps. Lately it's been the Herbert. My VHT will be here on Wed. if UPS doesn't delay it again. At which point I'm sure that will be the amp I play the most for awhile.

I have played all three and owned the SE+...for 2 days. Returned it. I thought the high gain was fizzy compressed....just bleh! The cleans were amazing though. Definitely try one before you buy because many people feel the same way about the SE+. Some people love it, too. I got it from Tone Merchants and I got all my money back but normally they charge 10% I think for returns. Noel was cool about it since it was a misunderstanding about the mods that were actually done on it.

This Reb Beach video where he uses the SE+ sounds pretty accurate of the tone I was getting with it . It does sound cool for leads but high gain rhythm tone IMO sounded just....not right. Mine had 5881 tubes and regular trannies while alot of people really like the el34s with plexi trannies. Suhr said he would charge me $200 for the plexi trannies and put in el34s for free but he also said that if I did not like the tone as it was already, the mods would do little to change that and el34s would actually make the cleans not as 'Fender-ish'...so I just returned it.

I was under the impression he was still using the SE and hadn't got his SE upgraded to the '+'?

I don't agree with that. The SE+ with whomp full on has an insane amount of low end. I've owned all 3 and had the SE+ to compare to both the Uber and the Herbert and IMO the SE+ had a comparable of low end.

I had no problem dialing in some killer "heavy" tones with the SE+. That said I feel the Uber and Herbert may be better suited to faster, more technical brutal stuff. Single notes on the SE+ are ridiculously punchy and fat, which make it excel at leads. However, I found for fast rhythm stuff that the fatness tended to walk over itself causing it lack some tightness and clarity. I think the Uber and Herbert hold their composure better doing the fast stuff. I found it a little too squishy/compressed for "brutal" rhythm stuff too. For medium tempo chugga-chugga hardrock/metal it rips, but if you're looking for teh brootalz I'd say Uber or Herbert.

Well, that's just the honeymoon. Get a VH4 & you will most likely let your Deliverance go after a while. VH4 is really cool amp to play, especially as a hobby, feels like no other amp in your hands.

I'm biased though, I'm a hardcore Diezel user. Good luck with your search!

May I ask what is it that you don't get from your current arsenal?
