Just got my Cameron Aldrich modded 1987x in today.

This is it. I can't imagine anything out there that sounds/feels better than this amp for metal.

I've owned, tried, borrowed the majority of the high gain amps on the market. Not one, has come this close to nailing the tone in my head.

I knew the first 5 seconds of playing this amp, just how good it was.

Crazy good amp!

scuse me for being a moron here, but never hearing a single cameron and seeing the aldrich one always touted as the best(from what i have read). what exactly sort of "metal tones" can it do? better for higher or lower or either tunings? what genre's of metal does it do?

I've never heard anything about how they handle low tuned modern metal. I'll let you know after I play mine though.

BURNTHISCORPSE- What type of metal? Well I'm a little old school (35yo) so for me it kills for 90's metal, but does the detuned thing quite well too.

yeah that was my question....what can it do well? i'm 31 and also very old school. but if i were using it for my own writing/band situations, it would be for either a) Iced Earth style. or b) 7 string drop tuned semi groove metal. angry though. not limp biscuit shit. but i have also always been a 6l6 lover too. so i dunno.

First, there DEFINATELY no "best" Cameron mod. They all kill. Seriously, it's just different flavors. Yes, the Aldrich is better for metal IMO. The Jose is a much better lead amp IMO. The Jose is smoother. Smoother mids and gain struture. The biggest difference between them (with my ears at least) is in the gain structure and mids. The Aldrich mids are more up front and in your face. It's better in a band mix (Mark has told me this himself). And I and my friend who has also had both mods agrees. The Aldrich is probably tighter too, but I can get my Jose just as tight if set up that way.

Mark discribed to me, that the Jose is more Marshally sounding, and the Aldrich is more Mesa sounding. I told him I thought just the opposite, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

As for modern stuff, it can do it easy. If not on it's own, with a boost....a clean boost. Depends on what options you have on the mod....compression/gain levels, etc, etc.

I'm not really all that familure with Iced Earth. His pickups were Duncans I believe, but I forget wht model. If you think the live stuff sounds good on YouTube, get the acual DVD (Evil or Devine). It's the absolute best tone I have ever heard in my life.

Got a little more time with it tonight.

Sounds killer with my 2x12 vintage Avatar cab w/ Emi Red Ryders.

Sounds not so great with my 4x12 (Celestion Blues/Tone Tubby Alnico in an X pattern), but this is not a metal type speaker setup anyways.

This thing has TONS of gain, I even turned the gain down to like 7 or so. More than enough for modern metal. Just for laughs I threw my RC Booster at it for even more....lol

I'm going to move some speakers around and put 2-Red Ryders and 2-CL80 clones in a X pattern to see how that works out. Should be smoking!

I haven't even looked at what tubes are in it yet, peaking through the back looks like a pair of GT's. I've got some KT77's on the way to try!

WHat do you have for push/pull pots/compression toggles? I'd put SED EL's in it.
