Can you easily make a head out of a Mark IV combo?

One of my Petrucci fanboy friends has found a quite interesting deal for a used Mark IV combo, but wants to imitate his idol even further and somehow make a head of it. I don't think he wants to modifiy the combo cabinet, but get a headshell from somewhere, a rackmount or whatever and put the chassis in it. Is that possible?

Is he looking at the short style chassis, or medium/long? The short one's are rackmountable. The short one has the extra 2 switches on the front between the graphic EQ and the master volume control.

And tell him that Dream Theater sucks

You can get a head cabinet from mesa as well. You can get them with a reverb tank and fan already installed as well so its easy to switch back to a combo for a grab and go set up as well. If he just wants a head then he might be better off waiting for a good deal on a head it might be cheaper.

So the combo chassis fits the rackmount??? I thought I had read it was only possible with the short head .

Well then, if he wants an original Mark IV headshell from mesa, which one does he have to order, the short or medium?

What size head is he looking to get? There's only 2 bolts holding the heads into the chassis. Takes 5 minutes swap the amp from a combo to a head chassis.

From what I understand, the conclusion is that the combo chassis will fit the rackmount and the short headshell, and the medium/long headshell is too long. Correct?

Yes the medium/long wont fit in the rackmount kits.
