Can you get a 4x12 sound out of a 212? Cabinet.

It's all about how much air you're moving, and the efficiency of your speakers.

Efficiency Example: a 1x12 rated @ 102 db will be louder than a 1x12 rated @ 96 db given the same input power.

Air Example: A 4 x 10 moves more air than a 2 x 12. Your friends' setups are sounding better because they're moving more air.

Of course, the quality of the speakers and construction of the cabinets and myriad other factors will play into the tone, but as far as sheer volume, if you want more volume, get more efficient speakers or move more air.

If you want to mess around with how "big" your sound is, hook up a BBE to your rig. Amazing how much bigger your sound gets when you remove some of the speaker phase cancellation.

Tried just about every 2X12 out there.
Nothing sounds closer to a 4X12 than a OS Port City Wave

I'd love too haha. Don't think I can afford a Mills though. Honestly, if I were going 412 I don't see why not, a small car can't fit a 412 but a big car can fit a 612. I still don't understand the need for 810 cabinets for bassists.

just do what americans do. get a gas guzzling 7.3L truck based on that one thing you have you might need to move once a year.

and as far as 8x10 cabs go theyre fucking tits along with a 2x18 cab  thats what i used to run. ive downsized to just an 8x10

I heard one certain "family" cab sounds like two Bogners or Diezels

I've heard that unless you've actually played a MILLs AB next to multiple boger/diezel cabs, you don't know WTF you are talking about. ;)

To each their own though. I would be willing to bet a MILLS 212 would hang with some 412s - but I've never played one.

Matt doesn't post audio, period.

Although he still has more cred than Wizard of Crap, at least he's come into contact with other forumites.

Id be willing to bet it wouldn't hang unless the cab was ported and even then there would be a difference. You are comparing 4 speakers to 2.

Two speakers will never sound like four speakers. There is no replacement for displacement - this actually comes from the automotive world, though. :)

One speaker can only move a certain amount of air at a given time. You can't expect one thing to sound like something else. Musicians do this ALL THE FUCKING TIME. And it really annoys me.

"What guitar will get me that Les Paul sound?" - a Les Paul.
"What amp will get me that Rectifier sound?" - A Rectifier.
"What cab will get me that 4x12 sound?" - A 4x12.

If you want your cab to sound like a 4x12, get a goddamned 4x12.

2x12's can "sound just a huge" but they're never going to be the same sound. Whether you prefer the sound of a 2x12 or 4x12 is another story. You can BS yourself all day, but when it comes down to it if you want a certain sound there are no shortcuts or substitutions.

Don't have Bogner cabs anymore, sold them after I played a MILLs cab. ;)

I'm not sure why it matters, they are only going to put one mic in front of your cab at any venue...And you won't be able to turn the thing up super loud anyway...unless you want to piss off the soundman..I think a 2x12 sounds just as big in a venue like the house of blues or keyclub here in Los Angeles...I have played with both and the 4x12 was 3 speakers I kinda didn't need..he put a mic in front of one speaker and put it thru the house..

It matters moreso to the player and what he/she hears or feels on stage. As far as what the audiance hears comming from the PA, that's entirely different :)

Someday I will, but in the meantime, come on down to a TX ampfest. I'll play for you. There's at least 100+ forumites who've heard me play in person - and heard the MILLS cabs. Whether or not you have, isn't my concern.

Thanks for assigning me internet cred though. Your approval means the world to me.

This is probably true and probably the reason that I've never bought a 212 cab.

I most definitely prefer 4x12's but these days Im trying to take the least amount of stuff to gigs. I settled on using 1 Ported 2x12 and it works , sounds killer but it's still not like having a 4x12

I need to find a 2x12, dragging the 4x12 out every Sunday is starting to be a pain in the ass since I am going from one basement to another and back again

I should have just kept that Genz 2x12 and reloaded it.

This is what I've been saying!!! It's like someone could be in the market for a cab with "huge but tight low end and great high gain tone that's not too harsh" so I recommend them a Recto cab and they're like "yeah, thanks dude, that sounds like an awesome purchase!" Then the next thing out of their mouth is "Which Mesa sounds better, the horizontal 2x12 or the vertical 2x12?" And I'll just be there like :bash: .....no, that's not what I said at all. They're thinking the magic is in the name rather than the piece of equipment that it is glued to.

*sigh*

you've got to love the internet :loco:
