I’ve got a Bacchus LP that I just changed pickups in. The stock pickups sounded good, but very dark and a little loose. When I took those out I saw that this guitar has paper in oil .022 caps installed. I installed a pair of Aldridge’s and it still sounds pretty dark. I know jack about PIO Caps. What do they do? Do they roll off highs? Should I pull them?

The .022uf value is OK, and PIO construction should be fine as well.
Assuming they are functioning correctly, the value of the caps will have a much larger effect on frequency roll-off vs the construction type.

I would check the value of the pots, and if they aren't already, change them all to 500k.
250k / 300k pots will dull the tone considerably vs 500k.

The caps are basically out of the circuit if you leave the tone on 10. They start to take affect as you roll the tone down. Use the 50’s style wiring and you’ll notice a difference especially when rolling back the volume. Also make sure the pots are 500k. It’ll brighten things up if you go with 550k’s too.

Folks have put these things on a scope: the tone cap only starts to make a difference after the tone knob is rolled down over half way. So swapping them almostly surely won’t help you.

I pretty much play with the tone dimed anyway, rendering the caps a non factor. Thanks dudes.

This is a pot relating issue not a cap related issue. Increase the pot value and/or the taper.
