i will admit i am a totally jaded tone snob.
i have heard, played, mixed, tweaked, and experimented with more tone toys than is reasonable and sane. so a tone that really makes me sit up and take notice is becoming more uncommon in my world.
i'm reading these VH-4 and Helios threads thinking is there anything fresh and pioneering?
steve's cherry bomb, mark day's friedman, and the steve stevens sig were amps in the last year that i thought sounded really nice. before that it was zach's cameron atomica and my friend harvey's carol ann DS-100.
well harvey has been doing his homework and this past weekend i mixed live sound for him and he had the DS-100 absolutely singing---i loved my OD2-r and i had that thing pretty dialed but harvey was killing me with his amp. he has always been a santana tone chaser which i am not totally into, and at first he was using altecs and had a very nasal cocked wah sound that to me didn't sound good at all.
but fast forward to this weekend--PRS into some pedals--reverend overdrive, flashback, boss gigadelay....into a soldano 2x12 loaded with EVs.....he ran the amp clean and got his lead tone from pedals and it was massive. classic joe bonomassa /ej lead fatness, and when he bent high notes they got louder and SANG. its the first guy i've heard of not actually using the lead channel but it was Killing Tone.
stoked to hear familiar yet unique sounds. that is all!
