Are they really just like the standard reissue greenback just able to take a pounding better?

Depends on your "chugga"...

I think anything up to Iced Earth is doable on the 65's, for me anyway. Don't know how they would fare for Melo-Death like Carcass or the like. Definitely work with fuzzy brutal Entombed like tones.

So it will do Priest, Maiden, Scorpions etc I take it?

well they are not "tight" so to speak. flatulent low end with my dual rec.

I'm with Reza on this. Definitely NOT tight.
They are a nice "greenback-y" speaker for classic rock. Not so good with my Twin Jet or Recto.
I had a 4x12 of the 65's. All I have left is 1 in a 2x12 with a Celestion Gold.
Best application would probably be a 2x12 of them to handle a 100watt plexi style amp for the old stuff. They do play well with other speakers. Could be cool in a 2 x12 with a vintage 30, but I haven't tried that.

Man I only owned a Dual Rec for a minute but I definitely did not hate them with that amp. Here is my SPlawn 2x12 (65's) and F-50.

Here is some single coil crunch stuff (since Priest was mentioned)

P-90's and a Deliverance 60

I'm no expert on these bands or their gear, but wouldn't the old style G12-65's and G12T-75's be closer to the mark??

I look at the "high wattage greenback" type speakers as problem solvers for when you need the power handling with a "Greenback feel" in a small 1 or 2 speaker package. If you can run a 4 x 12, just get regular greenbacks.

I also just remebered that while I haven't tried a V30 / Creamback combo in a 2x12, I did try 2 V30's in a 4x12 with the Creambacks, and in that case, 2 Heritage Greenbacks with the V30's was WAY better. The Gold / Creamback 2x12 only comes out once in a blue moon to use with an AC30 HW head.

I thought about the Creambacks too when I was having my 2x12 built. The guy building it talked me into G12K-100's when I told him I played mainly thrash/death type stuff. Glad he did cause they're pretty sweet for the heavy stuff :D They handle low end and chug/palm muted chunk REALLY well! Nice well rounded frequency spectrum IMHO. Been playing my newly acquired Herbert through them and the low end is outrageous!

I want to try mixing them w/ v30s. I've heard they sound pretty awesome together.

Sounded pretty awesome to me. I liked the P90's with the Deliverance.

Absolutely!
I use them in a closed 2x12 with my Splawn QR 50w and they sound awesome!
I play in an 80's hard rock/metal cover band.

Thanks! I was actually really surprised how much I liked the P90's with it as well!

Yeah man, these speakers kill for that type of rock/metal!

The Creamback 65 are great speakers! I've been using a mono 4x12 with Heritage Greenback 25w's for a long time ( what i like best for my tone ), i wanted a 4x12 that i could split stereo, for a dry-wet set up, and the one half-dry needed to handle my loud 100w amp, the 2 Creamback sound as good, if not better then the mono 4x12, same sound, bit more bigger/cleaner low end, sweet and aggressive at the same time. Here's a sample of the spks, i'm only using the half-mono of the stereo 4x12 cab. Bit of delay in the loop, and bit of a boost from a overdrive pedal.

Man that amp sounds great!

I think the G12H-75 Creambacks are probably closer to what you are looking for. Tighter low end and slightly higher sparkle on the top end over the G12M-65.

My creambacks are plenty tight with my Wizard metal. I have them on top of 2 V30's

I picked up another Splawn cab a week and a half ago. It's loaded with these and I really dig them so far. I've played 5 high volume gigs with them and really like the smooth top end, especially the lead tone. I haven't noticed the bottom end being super loose but definately not as tight as a v30. I've played it with my QuickRod and SLO. Works great for 80s as others said. Like anything you have to try them to see if they work for you.
